Hello-

I had a sprint race on Sunday. Overall, it was a great success for me. This is my third year doing the race, and I shaved 15 minutes off my time, which I am so proud of. I have to credit my 1/2 marathon training for the massive time improvement! When coaches tell you to schedule in plenty of good base training, they're not kidding!

My problem is that since the race on Sunday, I have been absolutely exhausted! I had a good recovery meal consisting of a bagel with a small amount of peanut butter, and plenty of watermelon. I had plenty of hydration during the race, and consumed 2 Clif gu packs. After the race, I spent a relaxing day at home, and got plenty of sleep that evening.

I have continued to do small amounts of training this week, including a short 10 mile bike ride, a 3 mile run, and a mini triathlon on Thursday Sep 3 which was 1/4 mile swim, 10 mile bike, 2 mile run. Any thoughts on what I might be doing wrong here? I have to run 11 miles tomorrow morning because I have my first 1/2 marathon coming up Oct 4! I'm worried that I'm not going to be able to shake this... and can't seem to figure out what's going on. I go to bed around 9:30 and set my alarm for 6, but have been sleeping right through it, I'm so tired!

Thanks for any help or suggestions you can provide!

Sounds like you need a few rest days where you do nothing to let your body recover. Could you be coming down with something?

Post race it is good to have some type of recovery drink within 15' of finishing that is 4:1 carbs:protein. Bagel and PB is okay but not many calories and not very much protein.

You may want to skip your long run or push it back a few days. No reason to follow your plan into a brick wall.

thanks for the advice Kathy. I definitely feel like I've run directly into a brick wall. I did no exercise yesterday, and plan to do none today. I can barely get out of my own way right now! I'm pretty worried about making sure I get my mileage in, but I have to remind myself it's better to be a little behind in training, than to over train and make myself sick in the process.

I'm going to try to continue reciting that in my head!

I'm thinking that a mini-Sprint four days after a Sprint might be keeping you from fully recovering. Just a hunch...

I'm thinking not enough protein in the recovery meal (in addition to 2 races so close together)

Do you get enough iron in your diet?  After a couple weeks of overall and unexplainable fatigue, I started taking a multi-vitamin that has iron and feel much better.  I also realized I don't get much iron in my diet so I am trying to work on that too.

If you feel exhausted, then its time to take a few days off of training.  If you are already up to 11 miles now a month before your half, you will be fine if you miss a few days.  Better to take a couple days off now and still have a time to get up to speed before the half.
