Subject: A question for Iron people or Iron people in training!
Have any of you done a full marathon while training for an Ironman? I ask because I'm currently training for CIM (CA International Marathon), and I'm discovering that I can't do a whole lot of running without injuring myself. But when I train for half Ironmans, I'm fine. I'm guessing that's because of less impact and not running every stinkin' day.

I do have an Ironman to train for (St. George), but the event isn't until May. CIM is in December. I just came across a 34-week training plan for an Ironman, and my first full Ironman just happens to be 34 weeks away. So now I'm wondering......should I continue my limited marathon training and hope that I don't get injured, or should I start training for St. George NOW and use CIM as a training race?

Please note: I'm TERRIBLE at full marathons. I'm perfectly comfortable with half marathons and olympic tris, but marathons always leave me sore and exhausted, and my marathon times are absolutely horrific.

Will I survive CIM from IM training, or should I strictly use marathon training for a marathon? I'm not looking to qualify for Boston or finish in under 3 hrs (although both would be nice!). I just want to run a good race and finish comfortably. Thoughts?

I am the same way. I start to have knee issues when I start racking up my weekly run miles.  I would say start with your Ironman training and do your marathon based off that training.  You might considering upping your run mileage closer to your marathon date though (that's what I'd do).  Since this is just a training race, just take it easy out there.. it's not worth getting injured with 5 months away from your IM.

IMO, marathon training requires the exclusion of triathlon training.

In order to adequately train for a mary, I think you need to running
6 days a week. There is just no way to "slip that in" to a IM training
plan. So, you're now looking at recovering from a mary (a few weeks
for me) and trying to train for a full IM in 12 weeks.

Maybe some people can do it, but I'm pretty sure I can't. I'm sure
I could finish the IM, but I always try to do the best that my pathetic
athletic ability will allow, and I'm sure my results would be pretty bad.

The second easiest way to get injured training for an IM is running.
If you're already on the edge of injury, seems like a bad idea.

Don't worry though, most people ignore my advice anyway.

No way! There's no way I could do that without injury. That's what happened last year when I was training for RnR San Diego. I got 2 weeks of training in and my IT band was fried. I had to cancel the race. It's also what I did last week, and I could feel my leg and IT band getting tight again. I just don't think my body can take that much impact all week.

I have pretty bad IT bands and I managed to
do the 100 runs in 100 days challenge last year.

The key for me is that not every day is running long. I would
structure it like:

Long, rest, short, medium, short, medium, short

When I did the 100/100 it was a lot of "short, short, short, short"
but I still saw huge improvements.

BUT, and it's a big BUT, we all know our own bodies best. If your
body can't do that, you would know better than I.

I just know I'd like to get in running 4 days a week training for a HIM.
I also want 3 bike, 3 swims. So I just run out of days and I have to double
up activities. I just don't know how you would wedge in long running
into that plan for a mary.

I trained for a marathon using the FIRST 3 day a week running plan. IMO it fits in well with tri training because the typical IM or HIM plan usually has 3x bike/run/swim per week.

I guess from your original post your goal would be to just finish the marathon but make the IM your A race? It's possible and the mararthon training will give you a great run base.  BUT dont risk injuring yourself for the IM, you do get to do a marathon during that race after all
