Tempe, Arizona
United States
Ironman North America
90F / 32C
Sunny
Total Time = 7h 00m
Overall Rank = 645/1950
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 129/354
Pre-race routine:

Woke up 3.5 hrs prior to start and ate two pancakes, two eggs, Ensure.
Too much activity, took too long waiting in line for restroom. Had to do lots of last minute prep--too stressful
Event warmup:

Not much--just 200m from entry in water to start line.
Swim
  • 1h 11m 24s
  • 3863 meters
  • 01m 51s / 100 meters
Comments:

Felt much better breathing only to left side (opposite my normal right side) but I train bilateral. Very happy with overall tiime--I was trying to break 1:20. My left arm fatigued a bit pre-race due to carrying heavy backpack around delivering my bags everywhere. I could feel left elbow dragging a bit during pull when breathing to right. Seemed to work much better when breathing opposite side???
Transition 1
  • 09m 56s
Comments:

Forgot to put towel in transition bag--lots of dry grass, and had to use port-o-potty. Also--didn't pre-sunscreen so had to wait to get it applied.
What would you do differently?:

Not put bike tools, etc in bike jersey prior to putting it on. Tough to keep from falling out as put shirt on. Pre-sunscreen!
Bike
  • 6h 16m 53s
  • 112 miles
  • 17.83 mile/hr
Comments:

Well...got uncomfortable on bike after first hour. Drank too much water throughout. Everything else went as planned with nutrition. Not sure why I felt bloated, but I did and could never push HR above 140. Plan was to go first loop 140, second 145, third 150 or less. I got very lethargic after first 1/2 of race and was struggling to stay awake...strange. I was taking two to three E-caps per hour, and carbo-pro with Gatorade Endurance every 15 min. Also ate two cliff bars, 4 Gu.
What would you do differently?:

Still trying to figure out what went wrong..
Transition 2
  • 06m 26s
Comments:

A bit better...no problems--just slow.
Run
  • 4h 52m 41s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 11m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

Biggest problem--cramping. Everytime I tried to push pace started cramping. Very bad cramp at mile 10--quad locked up and could not get to release. Hamstring, too. Finally got it to release and took 20 min to get from mile 10 to 11. Felt much better at around mile 18 and was able to take off and not stop at last 8 aid stations after I 'borrowed' some E-caps
What would you do differently?:

Take some salt tablets on run! And forgot to wear my watch (strapped to bike) so wasn't getting any splits.
Post race
Warm down:

No problems--felt great after race. Got massage.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Bike--not sure but maybe drank too much water. stomach bloated. On run--needed salt!

Great job, Ironman!  Sorry to hear about the cramps, that has to suck big time, but you're well prepared for next year. :)

Congratulations on the race!  You make Ironman sound like just another day at the office!

I'm not sure your "bloating" was from too much H2O.  My understanding is usually that's a sign your stomach is not processing calories well so I'd probably tend to believe it was somethiing else in your nutrition plan or maybe you swallowed a some water on the swim.  Lots of H2O should have just had you peeing a lot.
