I am old school and was raised that rules is rules and should be followed. Yeah, I get that this is a probably a once in a lifetime Mt Everest kinda deal for some people, but with 45k runners (less attrition, fewer starts but whatevs), there was a lot of folks I noticed oblivious to others around them. Same with some spectators. I saw a bunch of runners that almost got decked from some jag high fiving or whatever. Have fun but have some consideration for others running out there folks. Dang. I wonder how they could enforce that kind of thing to make the rule have some teeth. I know its an insurance thing they have to have in the legalese, but boo-urns on the rule breakers, and probably boo-urns on me for being a stick in the mud. (And boo-urns on my lack of paragraphs) |

I personally like the quiet while training and loved hearing all the people cheer as you pass by them during an event.
Now a cell phone... that is just crazy!

On a side note, this past September at Moo, I saw a guy texting on his bike while riding up Old Sauk Hill...was just kind of agog at that. The other thing I saw was at the bottom of the helix at the end of the bike. Some guy was messing with one of the vents on his helmet, and I realized that he had an iPod shuffle stuck up there. I personally don't understand the disregard for rules (and I'm a stickler for them) |

I don't understand why people believe rules do not apply to them. I will say, the ipods were less than I've seen in the past. |

I know it is frustrating to rule followers, but I haven't run in or been to a race around Chicago that they have enforced it and I bet over 20% easily had them in yesterday. On a similar note, I get a kick out of the people who were trying to cross the street between the runners. It is so packed there that there is absolutely no safe way to do it. If it was a tri, I would imagine some good forearms would be thrown. I |

Certainly people get hurt while training and racing, but prove they are due to an IPOD. I love my IPOD and train with it all of the time (except swimming although they make water proof ones now). I do not care if peole use them or don't. If someone is more motivated calling a friend on a cell phone or listening to an IPOD who cares? I don't even care if peoples wear matching clothes. Once I wore a green hat with black shorts and a red and purple coat. I was confortable and didn't care what others thought or think. I once saw a runner in the Marine Corp marathon wearing Hitop Chuck Taylor's. I didn't care. OK I made that stuff up for effect, but my point is: I think people should let this stuff ride as it really is not such a big deal. I am not interested in a long or personal debate about this, just wanted to give my opinion. chevy57 |

There is however a rule that says no ipods and whatever. So is it ok if you an I are racing for me to shortcut the race? Cause you don't care what I do right? I train with an ipod, but I respect the rules of the races and leave it in the car. If you dont' want to play by the rules, don't play. |

I was seeing folks with the devices not paying attention and running into others. Every one of them? Nope. But enough to justify having rules as to not have them. Believe it or not, some folks cant do more than one thing at a time and/or have no awareness of where others are. So, people care what others do in this case because it can cause injury to the runner with or without the ipod. If I zip past someone and they cant hear me calling out a pass and they freak out and veer the other way cuz they are in the zone into another person, thats a problem. If some tool is texting someone, as I saw a few times, and comes up on a water station or someone at a slower paceand runs into someone, that is a problem. Tutus and whatever the heck you want to wear is all fine and good because they dont limit your awareness of others. I know this is beating a dead horse here, but I saw a lot of textbook examples why folks shouldnt be using em.OK I have to give my 2 cents on this. Why do people care what others do? New Haven, CT | Subject: RE: Just follow the rules peeps! With all due respect: if it is "safe" to run in the dark wearing a headlamp, in winter, listening to an ipod, why is it "not safe" to run with an ipod at the Chicago Marathon? If there is a rule, i am not saying to break it, but why is the rule there in the first place ? IMHO, seems like one of these hard-core-runner type rules (i.e. only slow recreational "joggers" wear ipods in a race, blah, blah, blah). |

Because the rules are very everyone, not just the ones that want to follow them, we are adults and following rules should not be that big a deal. Personally I feel it disrespects the race to not follow the rules. |

If you have seen any race with over 5000 runners (in this case 45k registered, so probably upper 30k running) and people trying to weave through others, it should be pretty obvious. Its not an issue of just keeping yourself safe but keeping other runner safe. Someone training in the dark listening to an Ipod is likely only putting themselves in harms way. Big difference. |

There is a rule clearly outlined in the runner guide for the race. No electronic devices. Its not safe... Because they're aren't 40K runners running down a two lane road with 2+ million people cheering hanging out onto the road shirking the course further on your winter run. |

Not agreeing with a rule doesn't make it okay to break it... I'd like to race with an iPod too, but obviously that was deemed a BAD IDEA by someone for whatever reason. Member 53![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Just follow the rules peeps! It's about insurance. Basically the race organizers have taken on an enormous challenge of making city streets a safe place to run for 30k people at the same time. They have taken insurance policies to protect against those things that they just can not plan for. The insurance companies have looked and decided that we, as a group, are more likely to hurt ourselves if we can't hear each other, and said that ipods are something that the race directors can control, and therefore, if an injury happens to someone wearing one, the insurance will be void. And so we get rules that say if all of us want to run together, we can't wear ipods. And just because you don't like the rule, or the reason behind it, does not make it ok to break it. |

I would agree that a cell phone in a race is a bit over the top, but an ipod is.. pathetic? How so? Some people use it to get "in the zone" and since half of the battle is psychological, it can really improve their performance. e.g. See "Michael Phelps" if you want an example of someone at the top of their game relying on a pathetic ipod. |
