I am getting ready to start 1/2 IM traing and was wondering how others trained with thier nutrition, most of my training will not be at the same intensity as racing, what is the best approach to nail my nutrition at race pace?

I made sure to try the products that were going to be at the race during my long runs/rides first. Then dialed in the quantities I would need/could handle at race pace during a couple of longer bricks. It seemed to translate pretty well once I was out on the course.

x2

Never to early to practice. I worked on my IM nutrition for 1.5 years. I learned a lot in those 1.5 years and was able to adjust and adapt if need be and I had 3 different nutrition/hydration/sodium plans that I could switch between if I had issues. I knew them all cold and my goal was to take potential nutrition issues out of the equation by practicing different options.

I understand your question.... but, for your first HIM, at least for me, I didn't "race" it.  My race intensity wasn't all that different than my training intensity.  Do you think your race pace will be all that different?  It probably shouldn't, at least for a first HIM, anyway.

Gu love that stuff, so easy to down on the bike or the run. Main thing is figure out how many calories you need to take in per hour on the bike (200-300 or whatever) and on the run (100 to 150 or whatever) and how HOT it will be (are you going to need salt tabs). The play with the foods you will likely be having in the race and see how your body handles it.

It makes sence now, I dont know why I assumed that I should be zone 3-4 during a HIM. From what I have seen most of my plan has my intensity at zone 2, which I will probably try to simulate during my race,I hope. Thanks to everyone for thier advice, it will be most helpful in the comming months!
