Subject: Safe to do 86 miles back to back?
I've been off of training since mid August, but I've been riding 16.6 miles round trip to work every day (or at least as much as I can - given I work close to where we hold meetings, sometimes I get to walk). Plus I've been running some - sort of.

I've done a handful of long 4 1/2 hour rides for my HIM training, and have a century under my belt (101 miles) along with another year of cycling before triathlon training.

If I were to ride 86 miles Saturday, and then again on Sunday (return trip), am I gonna croak? I don't want to waste my time if I'm not going to make the trip. The trip isn't very hilly, except for the beginning.

So what do you all think? I'm only going to be bike commuting twice this week, since three days I'll be able to walk to work, so I figure I've got plenty of "taper" time.

Edit: This is probably pushing it, but I'm pondering even pushing it to a century.

It's all about pacing and nutrition.  If you don't hammer it and you eat right, you should have no problem.

I usually agree with Rick, this time is no different.

You may be a little saddle sore after two days that long (I feel it a little after ONE 5 hour ride), but you should be fine.

That is really the telling thing on attempting to do it.  Can your butt bones take the pressure two days in a row?

I made it for the trip down. Turned out to be 91 miles (with a slight southerly wind the entire way). But, I messed my right knee up somehow (probably by not training up to the miles!!). I had the drive of shame back home, with the bike in the back of my fiances car, too not mess my knee up any further.

This morning I felt like my knee was getting a little better, so I decided to bike to work. Now it's not feeling as well!

Did I mess my knee up for good? Do knee problems usually heal up? Do I need to stay off the bike!?

stay with it... I have no comment on the knee, but I so want to share what my coach had me do.

I did a 120 one day
and an 80 the following day

I am no longer intimidated at teh notion of 112 at all.

It was a train the big muscle thing and I didnt even know it.

I've noticed it's the inner-top (inner as in my left) part of my knee that hurts. Does that mean too low of a saddle? I'm wondering if the seat post has moved down since my fitting.
