Subject: Sleeveless Wet Suit in 61 - 62 degree water?
I'd like to hear back from Ironman or half Ironman competitors about wearing a sleeveless wet suit in water temps that will most likely be 61-62 degrees on race day (IM AZ, Nov. 23). I will wear a neopreme cap to keep heat in that way. I have never swam in water quite that cold in sleeveless wet suit. Coldest was around 70 degrees on race day (with air temps at 38 so it felt good to get into the 70 degree water!)

Buying another wet suit with sleeves is not really an option
Thanks
Becky

I'm no IM, but that is pretty cold water. IM/HIM guys and gals or coaches can probably give you a better feel for hypothermia risk. I personallly go full sleeves all the time..regardless of temp (assuming wetsuit legal). What is your expected swim time?

Just curious though: If buying another wetsuit with sleeves is not an option..what options do you have? renting?

It's not bad at all. I swim in 62 every day with no wetsuit at all and up to a mile and a half. So, a sleeveless will be even better. Helps to warm up first.

If you do 62 degrees in open water with no wet suit at all, that is pretty hardy.
My last IM swim time was 1:23. My only other option would be to look into renting one.

Everything I have read says that if you are going to wear a wet suit to always go with a full body.

If you don't have an option to buy one with sleeves you don't have a choice but it will be cold. I would vaseline up your arms which should help a little.

I just did an HIM in Tempe Town Lake last weekend and the water was 64 degrees.  I swam it in a sleeveless, and I am a total wimp when it comes to cold water.  To my surprise, I was pretty comfortable (I used a neoprene cap under the race-issued one, and also used earplugs to keep the cold water out of my ears).  Good luck at IMAZ - I'll be volunteering on the swim!

B-
thanks so much for the update on your swim there. Wow, I can't believe the water temp is already down to 64! We still have over 3 more weeks. It could still really drop. But, I guess I will go with the sleevless and definately the neopreme cap.
