I was an idiot and did the Chicago Tri (Sprint) this past weekend without a wetsuit in 63 degree water.  It was the last time I'll make that mistake.  That being said, I was only cold up top.

Does anyone have one of these?  It seems like it might be a good fit for me (not to mention that it's more, ahem, cost effective).

I have one,  can't imagine wearing the top only though.  The speed advantage comes from floating the hips and thighs.

The wetsuit combo does provide warmth just like every other wetsuit, but the main thing is the bouyancy which adds speed.  If you wore the top alone it would slove the warmth problem but you'd be  floating the top half while letting your legs sink.  I'm not an expert but I have to believe that this would be counter productive.  You wanna stay warm yes, but you also wanna finsih fast without using extra energy.

The T1 Speedtube pants  are awesome.  Its great to be able to wear just the pants and get all the speed advantage and not be too constrained or too warm.  There great.  1 lap in a pool with the pants alone and you wanna get out and start texting friends.  I wan't a wetsuit believer so I liked the idea of getting  just the bottoms checking it out and if i thought it was worth it getting the top.  It took all of 2 weeks for me to go back and order a top.

I got the Smart 1 top.  Its their lower end model.  Its alot  thinner than the pants by design, you don't need the bouyancy on top just the warmth.  I've done open water swims in Lake Mich twice in this set-upand i'm well north of Chicago and understand the cold water issues.

You can not go wrong with this set-up.

That's an interesting perspective.  I only thought about the wetsuit as an aid to keep me warm, not to help with swim speed - but that makes perfect sense.

I'm not out to win any records (just the occasional PR), so I'll have to see if the idea of a little help during the swim outweighs my cheapness.  Tongue out

Truth be told I bought the bottoms only because I was cheap.  I wanted to check out the bouyancy thing, didn't think it was a big deal or would help.  I couldn't believe the difference.

Bought the top for warmth soon there after, 1 training swim in Lake Mich is all it took to open the purse strings... Cold water swims suck.

Regradless of why you buy or what can't go wrong with De Soto...  great people. great suit.

Another Michigan guy here.  I have the Black Pearl bottom and the Smart1 top.  If and when I buy another wetsuit, it will be Desoto.

While I don't currently own a Desoto wet suit, the post by Emilio is exactly why I will next time I buy a wetsuit.  The customer service comments I've seen here and ST are amazing and the fact that the owner actually listens and responds to questions shows the commitment.  When your company is successful already, the little extra things show they care and are not just in it for the money.

Very nice to see in this day and age.

Thank Emilio!!!
