I was running down the stairs to the front door this afternoon when I stumbled on the steps and fell hurting my second toe on my left foot.  Over the next few hours it improved and didn't bruise or anything so when my husband got home I taped it, threw on my shoes and since it felt pretty good I went for my long run (~4.5 miles).  It hurt a little while I was running but nothing that made me think I should stop so I did my run as planned.  When I got back and walked my cool down I could barely put any weight on it and when I took of my shoe my toe had turned lots of bright colors that are inappropriate for healthy toes.

So I'm thinking (with the clarity of hindsight) maybe I should have skipped the run tonight but now I'm wondering if I should bag my swimming and biking for the weekend.  Thoughts?

I would say any activity that puts pressure on the toe is a bad idea and should be avoided at all costs. (That's biking and running, for sure). Swimming doesn't sound too bad, and I know being in water can be therapeutic, too. You could also do some deep water running. My rule is, if it's changing my gait or form, if it just plain really truly hurts, don't do it.

Oh, and also: RICE it.

What's done is done. Ice, Advil and a good nights rest is what I would do next. As for tomorrow, even if the toe was broken (which it's probably not) a swim would be safe. Make a judgement on the bike tomorrow when you see how it does overnight. A rest day wouldn't hurt tomorrow either.

Good luck and slow down going down the stairs.

I'd swim for sure and probably give the bike a try. This gal has been coming to spin classes at my gym with a broken toe... she hobbles in and out, but gets thru the class no problem.Hope it heals soon.

If only that would actually help.  I'm a natural klutz.  Just yesterday I fell off my bike (again) and scraped up my elbow.  I possess the grace of a water buffalo with an inner ear imbalance.

On land or in the water?

On land while wearing roller skates.
