Subject: Help with cassette
Doing a chain cleaning (Tri next weekend) and took rear tire off.  As I was cleaning the cassette I notice that gears were a little lose.  Found there was just a little gap between the top two gears.  Not supposed to be that way right?  Checked my spare rear wheel with cassette and it is tight.

Broke out the park tools that I just got and took the lock ring off.  Everything looks okay but put back together and still a bit of a gap.

It's a shimano hyperglide cassette with an Ultegra hub.  Any ideas why this won't tighten all the way?  Should I swap the cassettes?

Help!  Luckily I have plenty of time to take it to the LBS if I can't figure it out but would rather save the trip and the money.

if it's 10s, there is supposed to be a spacer behind the cassette. Not having it would cause what you describe.

It's a 9 but I suspect that is the issue.

I've had that happen and I just take it off and put it back on..once it took 2 extra tries and it was fine. Do you have each cog going the right way? They are stamped on the side that goes out.

If you look at it does the spacing look right?

Dang if you weren't on the money!  I took the thing apart (first time so was interesting).  Half of the cassette is bolted together with the top 4 not bolted together.  Took it all off the hub, cleaned it up, put it back together and it's perfect. 

Thank Kathy for this tip and thanks to everyone helping out!  I learned a little today.  Thank goodness I had already bought the Park tools to do this.

Nope, it was loose to start with and have no definite reason why it was loose.  It wasn't loose a couple of weeks ago when I cleaned it.  Still a little confused why this happened but glad it is working.
