Subject: Help, please! 7 weeks till triathalon and I need help!
Hi all!  I have somehow decided I want to complete my first sprint triathalon on October 31 in Savannah, GA.  They have a "Fun Fall Triathalon Race" which consists of a 500 yard swim in a park lake, 16 mile bike ride (flat course) and 5K run.  I have to be totally honest, I know very little about triathalons and really could use some help in all arenas.  Prior to deciding to do this I was relatively active -- running, spinning, aerobics, etc.  Basically, I'm starting this endeavor with a Trek mountain bike with road tires, a good pair of running shoes and swimsuit!  I feel very comfortable with the bike and run and my ultimate goal is to just finish -- I'm doing this for myself and completing it is all I am looking for.

I need help with gear suggestions, training suggestions, just about anything and even an honest answer if you think I can actually do this.

One more thing, I have found an online training program that I started last week and am doing okay with the workouts -- the swim is the hardest for me at this point.  Also, I have a good friend who was a collegiate swimmer that is helping me in the pool.

Like I said please help!  THANK YOU ALL SOO MUCH.

Lisa

What program are you doing? I decided to do tris next year and am working on the Sprint 3x balanced program. I was just going to run a few 5ks this fall... then started the training got bit by the bug and am doing a duathlon the 25th... then last night I lost my mind and decided to do a sprint next Saturday. I found a tri top for $10 on the classifieds, bought aevero tri shorts, yankz laces, a race belt, rented a wetsuit (the 62 deg Atlantic is a little cooler then your Ga water), and bought a good pair of running shoes. I'm in the same boat, just with shorter time. PM me if you want anytime! GL and be crazy!!!

Sounds like you are pretty good to go. You have a swimsuit, bike, and shoes. As long as you have a helmet, sunglasses, and some sunscreen I think you are probably set. Stick with your plan (lucky to have your own personal swim coach) and you should do fine. 7 weeks should be lots of time to get ready, especially if you already feel that you have a decent fitness base to start from.

Good luck and have fun.
*** Warning *** Triathlons are very addictive. This is my first year and I am pretty sure I am hooked for life.

Sounds like you should be good to go.  I would recommend getting as much swimming in as possible.  My first Sprint Tri was Labor Day and the swim was in a pool.  I did this for a reason...swim is my weak link right now.

Other than that, some transition runs to get familiar with it and  you will be fine.  I found several transition videos on youtube actually and plenty of advice from this website.

Have a blast and my money is on, once you are done, you're going to want to do it again! =o)

This was my first year of competing in Sprints Tri's and like you I started with a plan.  Mine was 12 weeks long, but you should be able to complete the Tri with the eight week plan.  I think it is good that you are doing a shorter swim.  You should be able to complete the bike (yes your Mt. Bike is fine especially with road tires and it sounds like you have done some running as well).  The swim will be your biggest hurdle.  I found that I should have added at least one or two  more sessions each week in my swim for my first race.  I got through it but it wasn't the prettiest.  I did some side stroking and breast stroking during the swim as well; none the less, I finished.  I spent quite a bit of time looking at swim videos on line (YouTube and other links) focusing on freestyle technique and swim drills I could do each session that would add a bit of variety to the swim sessions and help me with swim technique.

I went a little bit beyond what an average first timer might buy for gear.  Some basic gear would be a good pair of swim googles (maybe a backup pair); ear plugs if you have balance issues coming out of the water (it helps); get a swim cap as you will probably have to wear one in the race so get used to it, sounds like you have running shoes, you might invest in a pair of Tri Shorts which you can wear on the bike and run (even the swim in some cases) or just compression shorts since the bike is 16 miles.  The Tri shorts have a little bit of padding on the bottom but not enough to interfer or inhibit your running in them.

I am not sure of the temp of the lake you swim leg is in.  Some people rent wetsuits for the swim.  I did for my first two races.  I rented from Wetsuitrental.com.  Mybe a bit far and I am sure there are other vendors in the area to rent from.  The wetsuit will provide you some added boyuancy, floatation and warmth if the water is cold.  If you do decide to rent a wetsuit I would recommend you try it out in the lake two or threee times before using it.  It is a very different feeling wearing a wetsuit; otherwise just go without the wetsuit alot of people do this.  If you did wear a wetsuit you can wear your tri shorts and top underneath and not have to worry about putting them on in the First Transition (AKA T1; swim to bike).  Also go with another person if you are doing an Open Water Swim in the lake and if you haven't swam in Open Water Before make sure you stick close to shore.  It is a whole different swim than in a pool.

Practice riding without bike gloves as it saves you time in T1;  Very hard to put them on and take them off; if you feel you need the comfort and do not mind taking the time go ahead and wear them.  I had clipless bike pedals and bike shoes prior to starting triathlons so I used them as well, but those can be expensive so for your first one it is fine to just wear your running shoes.  Having your running shoes on will save you time in Transition 2 (AKA T2; Bike to Run).   Last few items for convienence - Race Belt to clip your Bib Number to for the run and possibly a timing chip leg band to attache you timing chip to.  I like the ones that are neoprene with velco better than the ones they give you at the races in your packet (reminds me of those bands they put on your wrist when you go to the hospital.

Again I learned alot wathcing videos of Transitions on YouTube.  It is amazing what you can find for assistance as well as looking around on BT which was a big help.

Lastly,  GOOD LUCK, HAVE FUN and ENJOY YOURSELF!!!

didnt read the "in the lake part" if its anything like the ocean or river over there at that time of year you'll probably want to heed the above posters warning and get a wet suit.

i did my first sprint with also relatively little training time and equipment.  Bike, helmet and sneakers.  no goggles or glasses even!  I think i did maybe 2 bricks before the race.  I just made sure I could do the distances (even though i never did them together until the race!)

My best advice: get in the open water soon!  have your swim friend swim close to you so you get the feel for being out in the open water with people near you.
when you start your race, hang back and avoid the crowd of swimmers- I did this too and was still surprised with how much anxiety the situation creates. (serach on youtube for triathlon swim start video- there's a very funny one from ClifBar)

also see if you can grab some tri-shorts and either a sportsbra or a tri top (or a fitted lycra/workout top with a built in sportsbra which is bascially the same thing). This way you don't have to change any clothing at all the whole race- swim bike and run in it.

get used to drinking on the bike- I had never done this before and i really had to practice taking out my bottle and putting it back while biking with one hand.  its basically your only chance to hydrate during the race.  make sure to drink lots of water the 2-3 days before the race.  I went to a wedding and drank 5 shots of vodka and no water the day before my first sprint- i got so dehydrated i almost passed out later that day!

and finally, get ready to become addicted!  looking forward to your post-race update!  good luck!
