Subject: Time of Day, Temperature, or Combo?!?!?!
I got a heart rate monitor for my birthday (a year ago) and started using it this week. I did a 5 mile run on Saturday trying to maintain a heart rate of 145-148. The run started off pretty good but about half way through the monitor was beeping telling me to slow down. By the end of the run I was practically walking to keep my HR below 148 (it peaked at 160). My time for the run was 57:57.

Now, fast forward to today, I did, almost, the exact same run but I had to work to get my HR to 148. I did on some of the hills but for the most part I was pushing myself to keep my HR up. My time for this run was 48:01 (4.8 miles).

Here are my questions: 1. Is the difference in heart rates from Sat. to today due to the change in temperature (75 on Sat., 55 today)? 2. Could it be I ran at a different time of day (1:30 pm on Sat., 8:00 am today). Or 3. Is it a combonation of the two?

If you look at my logs they are pretty much up to date. I have been slacking off the last couple of week but I needed a mental vacation. I am getting back into training for a 5k in November.

Combo of those two, and probably several other factors.

I know nothing about HRM's, therefore I have no answer that will help you whatsoever.

What I have found on my runs, however, is that sometimes I have to really push myself to hit a certain pace, while other times I can relax and "enjoy" the run and I'll hit that same pace.

I think the heat plays a major role in my performance, but I'm sure factors such as nutrition/hydration/stress/etc. all factor in as well.

Probably a combination of things, but a 20 degree difference in outside temps makes a big difference in your body's ability to cool itself and not need to keep the HR up to maintain blood flow to the surface for cooling purposes.  Time of day seems a lot less likely overall.  But your attitude that day may also affect things.  I find a lot of times when I tell myself I am going to have an easy slow run, for short runs, my time is actually better, and I have more reserves than if I plan to push the pace. Weird.

My other thought is not to get too caught up in the numbers game.  Pay attention to how you are feeling during the run, glance at your HR, and see what numbers reliably correlate to feeling that you are pushing yourself. I usually run an average HR of around 160 for runs, with peaks in the low 170's. So I know I am "cheating" if I back off or walk with a HR of say 164, since I can reliably maintain a higher HR without problems.  On the other hand, high temps or humidity means my same route will give me a slower time with a higher overall HR, and more times I may need to slow down or even walk to drop into the 160s again.

Temperature, humidity, hydration, moon angle, sun spots, whether you started on your right foot or left, how much sleep you got, how sore you are. All of those plus about a bazillion others play a part on it.

Temp, humidity and overall health (including how sore you are) are the biggies, though.

Buc,

Besides the HR...did it feel harder?  Did you feel exhausted, or at least much more tired than usual?  That has happned to me and I mainly contribute it to the heat but I think it I may have been a bit dehydrated as well...which made it seem even hotter.  SO you are not alone...I wouldn't worry about it.

From reading a lot of posts here I am thinking about simplifying my runs a bit into the Easy, Moderate, Hard categories and giving my HR's a wider range.  I want to run more on feel than HR because of these differences.  It's also kind of fun to run and "guess" your HR and then look at your watch...I surprise myself how in tune I am sometimes.

It gets pretty hot and humid here in the summer, and my run splits decrease within my training zones considerably. As others say, there are many factors that play a role, but temperature has got to be one of the biggest. Distance runners like to run in the 50s for a reason.
