Subject: thinking about doing Florida 70.3 HIM in May. How tough is this one?

I am thinking about making the HIM in Orlando Florida May 2009 my first HIM.  How tough is this HIM?  The bike path looks to have a couple of hills that go 200 feet high.  I am not really sure how much 200 feet really is.  There is not really that many events and I am curous how this stacks up.  I would prefer something as easy as possible for the first.  Like the how the Chicago marathon, usually, is the flattest and easiest.  Minus the unusual heat for the last one.

Right now I am doing 7 mile runs on Sunday for my long run.  I did a 45 mile, flat bike ride on Saturday without pushing at an average speed of 21mph.  I have not been swimming lately but was up to doing 1/2 mile pretty easily a couple months ago and feel like I can get to 1.2 miles easily within the time frame.

My goal for this one would be just to finish.  Ok, my goal is really under 6 hours.  Well reallly under 5.5 hours.

Like to hear thoughts.

I did an Oly on the same course area as the 70.3. I did not like it because the run was in unmowed deep grass with no shade for about half the run but I know a lot of people that did the 70.3 and swore not to return. I will let them chime in.

I can say that a good portion of the run is offroad trail type run. Also the lake you swim in is dark and merky and not wetsuit legal that time of year. I was not a big fan of the location overal but I will probably do the Oly there again next year because it is for Cancer Research.

Edit to say you should post this in the Florida thread and you will probably get more response.

I haven't done the Florida 70.3, so I can't say.  I've only done the SC HIM in Greenwood twice, and the Gulf Coast HIM last May (Panama City Beach).

Gulf Coast Half: I would definitely do it again.  Beginner friendly, I thought.  VERY generous cutoff times.  The ONLY problem with this race was the inferno-like heat on the run, for which this race is famous.  I packed my tri top with ice, and was fine, but I'm slower than a turtle and don't much care about speed.  My vote:  Consider doing this race next May.

SC Half: I've done it twice.  Great course, well-run event, except the bike course is somewhat hilly and pretty challenging for a beginner cyclist (such as myself)

If this is your first 70.3 then it's perfect with the only downside is that it can be really HOT and humid on race day as was the case this last year.  The swim is in a calm lake where the water tempature is warm but you can't wear a wetsuit.  The bike and run course are flat and fast and the couple small hills you encounter are nothing.  Even though the tempatures were hot there was plenty of aid stations along the way stocked with fluids and ice.

My advice is leading up to the race practice open water swimming without a wetsuit and stick to a nutrition plan and don't try anything new on race day especially if there is heat.  I came off the bike and could of done under a 5:10 race with ease but I messed up my nutrition and ended up with GI issues on the run.

May is the dry hot month here in FL (brush fire season).  In-land FL is out for me that time of the year, I'd stay on the coast for a chance of having a sea-breeze!  I know someone locally that did it last year and he said he won't do it again as the run was brutal hot.   If you want flat then the races up in the panhandle, on the coasts or south FL (Miamiman) are ideal.  I did Miamiman in Nov 06 and it is a very flat race but the weather was still warm for that time of the year.

It was my first.

I liked it but the run course being 1/2 off road sucks.

I did it in May 2008. Swim and bike are great. It gets very hot on the run and most of it is off road in the dirt trains of Fort Wilderness. Still had a great experience and great event to bring family or friends to.

I recommend following a BT training plan for your first HIM. It served me well.
