Well, not kill me exactly, but cause me to drown?

I've been training for 2+ years now. I have seasonal allergies, but they are 100% controlled by Flonase. Ever since I started training, I had the normal chlorine reactions while swimming- drippy runny nose, etc, but usually post-workout. Occasionally, I would get a decent amount of phlegm in my throat that would feel uncomfortable. No big deal- no issues in the other 2 sports, and it only happened occasionally.

Over the past 2 weeks, this phlegm seems to be waiting with reserves. On a few swims, it has made it increasingly more difficult to breath. I have no signs of a cold, no sore throat, no increase in allergies, nothing. Finally, the phlegm went in for the kill- I was doing a hard set of 100's, went up for a breath- nothing, only phlegm, I could not breath. Ok, I didn't need that bout of O2. Next breath- nothing- no air, my passage was completely blocked by this crud. My chest isn't tight, there's no phlegm in my actual lungs, I can't hack it out, my breathing feels normal- it's just blocked by the phlegm! This was the first time I have not been able to breath on my own and it scared the crap out of me.

Now, if it were just swimming, I wouldn't think it was a big deal (I would gladly stop swimming ), but lately, I've been having the phlegm creep in while running hard and biking hard. Not the same blockage as in the water, but enough to make me post this here. I have health insurance, so going to a doctor isn't a problem, but I really hate to be a hypochondriac. How can I tell if this is a cold, more severe allergies or something a little worse (like EIA?)

Not to be picky or anything Jazz but if you actually drowned from the phlegm, wouldn't that be killing you?

Will it come out in the pool? I leave some real nice "jellyfish" in the pool when I get stuffy. I would have it checked out if it concerned you.

Well, I was thinking that Phlegm would be the indirect cause of death, suffocation due to excessive water inhalation would be the immediate cause...I suppose...but maybe I am actually suffocating on my own phlegm? Hmm...

Anyways, yes, I can get some of it out, but never all of it, and that can only happen after it's attacked. I hate having to stop one of my sets to sit there and blow snot rockets into the drain.

I see two potential causes of death:
(1) you suffocate on phlegm
(2) you aspirate phlegm and drown (on the phlegm)
i think both of these would suck (quasi-pun)

the phlegm may actually protect you against aspirating water - if it is blocking your airway so well that water cannot get in. not really a benefit I guess.

the above is all tongue-in-cheek of course. I woudn't worry about being a hypochondirac by seeking relief for a persistant symptom. If you return every week with a new symptom and try to tie it to some crazy seldom diagnosed disease then the doc may suspect you to be hypochondriac.

Like coming to a race with a made up story of getting sick 5 or 6 times, not being able to eat anything, etc. Then go ahead and take 2nd place overall female by 3 seconds!! You hypochondriac!!!

I also have allergy like reactions when swimming, whether it is in a lake or pool. Somehow I have never experienced it on race day(knock on wood)

Where's Dr. Pete when you need him?

Ever tried a Neti(sp?) pot to rinse your sinuses?  I know people that swear by them.  Might try it right before the swim to flush most of what's in there out.
