Pre-race routine:

Alarm went off at 6:45 and I had to really convince myself to get out of bed. I was up late the past 2 nights doing home improvement stuff and had about 4 hours of sleep each night. But it was a beautiful day and I was really looking forward to getting one more 5k race in this season to see if I couldn't grab one last PR. Finally threw the covers back and go moving. Grabbed a Clif Bar and banana before heading out the door. Hit 7-11 for a cup of coffee. Popped 200mg caffeine about an hour before the race.
Event warmup:

About a mile jog with a few accelerations to finish off then 15min of stretching.

Comments:

Good run overall. I went out in the lead and settled into a comfortable pace as a group of 5-6 passed me around 800m in. Hit the 1 mile mark feeling good but with a very dry mouth...had to wait to the 1/2 point for the water station. I tried to stay relaxed and carry a consistent pace. Mark passed me just after the water station and I stayed within 20m of him the rest of the way. The final straight was about 600m long and I started to kick with whatever I had left. I was sure I had a PR but didn't know exactly how fast I would be. Once I could see the race clock I realized that I could go under 17:30 if I could just push myself all the way through.
What would you do differently?:

I ran a good race considering I wasn't trained for short distance stuff at this point in the season. Although, looking at my splits it seems I went out too hard and might have paid for it with slower splits for miles 2 & 3. It sure didn't feel like I was that much slower after the first mile. Of course have to assume that the mile markers were accurate otherwise my splits don't mean much.
Post race
Warm down:

I started with the usual...barely staggering down the chute and then down to the ground. I actually got myself up within about 60sec and walked around a little. Once I got my legs back I went on about a mile easy jog.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I've been training for a marathon so my workouts haven't been well suited for such a short fast race. My current "speed" work consists of mile repeats at 6:24 pace and I opened today with a 5:10. One of these days I really need to spend a month training specifically for a 5k.
