Subject: Swim Cuts

I just got back from a clinic for a triathlon I'm doing in a few weeks and ended up with multiple cuts on my feet and a nasty gash on a finger during the swim. Several of us were cut. I'm pretty sure I've never bled so much in my life. One guy had so much blood on his hands that he looked like he had just murdered someone.

 I'd like to avoid this during the race. Are there USAT legal swim socks that can be worn during a race? If not, do you have any tips for avoiding cuts?

What caused them? I've never heard of cuts on your hands. Cuts on the feet climbing out of the water rarely, but never on the hands. Strange.

I had similar thing happen at my first ows practice swim and race.

For the race I just wore cheap socks under my wetsuit..worked out. Now I have neoprene botties for cold swims that I will wear if in and out of the water is hazzardous. I would stand when hand touches bottom and hopefully avoid cutting my hands.

I was about 200 yards out and hit a rock with my finger.  I pulled my hand out of the water and the blood was just pouring out.  The foot cuts were from getting into and out of the water.  It's going to be a disaster on race day.  I hope the medics bring a few cases of band-aids.

I sent a note to the coach and he's going to recommend authorizing swim socks to the race director.  I think I'm going to bring some either way.  I can barely walk today.

I wonder if they'll let me swim with Crocs on...

This sounds terrible. You would think for liability purposes alone, they would spend a little time  before the race having a few people with masks and snorkels clear out the path leading into the shoot. This is of course assuming it is not  coral. I think I would just wear a pair of neoprene socks. They can easily be repaired if sliced up. Booties (like surfers wear) are a bit heavy

 Haha, that's funny!  

The race isn't for another month, and they will do some clearing of large rocks.  There will supposedly be a carpet down at the swim exit.  That's not going to solve the problem though.  My finger got cut far out from shore and the water is pretty shallow 100 yards out.  I think anyone who puts their feet on the ground is going to get cut.  

The race is the Marin County Triathlon by the way, and the swim is in San Francisco Bay.  I think it's going to be a great race and the people behind it are fantastic.  The rest of the venue is amazing and I think they'll do what they can to make the race injury free.

 I have been considering adding one more tri to my season by doing that race. But the following warning on their website caused me some concern.

 "Please pay attention to the fact there will be other traffic on the roads, and please be aware that city, county and state vehicles will be throughout the course doing their civic duty, and not just rooting you on."

 My sister-in-law got a moving violation on her bike in Sausalito. I can do without trying to dodge the local cops during a race. Moreover, I think a $225 entry fee is a bit high even for a race that is donating the net proceeds to charity.

The race is actually in San Pablo Bay at McNear's Beach (China Camp State Park). I did a race there in early June and I checked it out during a minus tide. It is VERY SHALLOW there and near the pier, it is very rocky so I can see how someone could get cut from the mussels and barnacles and whatnot. If you swim there, it's best to the Northern end of the beach during high tide. Don't try to walk out to deep water, you will sink in mud up to your knees. Oh, visibility there is usually very poor. Hopefully, they scheduled the race for high tide.

I was going to do the race but I agree, I think $225 is a bit much for a Olympic distance race, charity or not. It sounds like a fun race though.
