Subject: First race in 2 days! Nervous

hi everyone,

I am signing up tomorrow for my first sprint.  I have been training but i am worried about surviving the entire distance as i have only done run/swim   or bike/run bricks and then not many!

the race is 1/2 mile swim in a lake,  21 mile bike on an extremely hilly course and a run 4.9 miles.   

my weakest is the  bike as i have only done 18 miles as my longest in training.   i just started swimming last year for the first time in my life and average 2:24/100yds with my longest 4000 yds but average 3000 yds 2-3 times per week.    my running is the strongest with 35 miles/week   average 8:15/mile for 7 miles.

what is your opinion on how i may do?    should i really take the bike easy as it is the newest and most undertrained area?    thanks tg

Strange distance race, not quite an Oly bike/run with a sprint swim.  Don't worry about how you will do.  You are ready go and will have no problems finishing.  You have a strong run and that will make up time.  Can't say whether you should "push it" or not as I don't know you.  Personally, I am pretty type A and have redlined every race in this my first year (all sprints) and did not blow up

Given your training you should be fine. Just pick a pace you can hold and stick with it. On the run you will know if you can kick it the whole way or not. It sounds like you are good to go. I am sure you will finish, it is just a matter of how hard you want to push the first tri. Mostly enjoy yourself.

The idea of your first race should be to complete it. Should do just fine...

Yay you on your first race! My first one is Saturday ( lessthan 24 hours now) and I am pretty nervous too! Good luck, see ya back here when all this is over.

thanks for the input.    do you think that i should go over to the lake today or tomorrow and try swimming a bit in the wetsuit???     i live in maryland and it was 78 degrees this afternoon.  i have no idea about the water temperature but i would say high sixties low seventies.   

 

i rented a sleeveless full suit.   the lady at the rental store said it is very "thick"   and my legs are really going o float.    should this be a big problem?   also should i wear a long sleeve body armour type shirt underneath the wetsuit and take it off for the bike?

Sounds like you'll be fine for the race. Just remember a few things.

1. Have Fun!
2. Relax. This is hard to do but the mental aspect can be harder than the physical.
3. Hydrate well before the race. My 1st race was at a similar distance and cramped up horribly on the bike after barely drinking before the race.
4. Smile at the finish line for the photo.

You will do great.  Just take it easy and have fun.  I did my first race this past weekend and was nervous as hell...  once it started it was great....  such a rush.  I only trained for 6 weeks and wasnt coming from a strong base at all...  I finished in 2:20 and had plenty of gas left in the tank (along with some regret that I didn't push it harder on the bike and run)... but my goal was to finish with a smile on my face and that I did! See pic...

Definitely get out and swim in the wetsuit at least once before the race!  IMO it makes swimming easier becasue it makes your legs float and naturally puts you into a "downhill" swimming position.  Gotta love boyancy!
