Subject: Athletic Benefits to a Sauna?...
The Y where I swim has a sauna near the pool. I was wondering if anyone knows of benefits of using a sauna. Is it good after a hard workout to loosen up sore muscles and ligaments? (I'm prone to tendonitis in my IT band and heel.) Or is it dangerous in that instance?

I want to be taking advantage of it if it's useful to amateur athletes such as myself. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!!

What is the "hard workout"?  Cardio or strength WO?

Sauna's are not recomemnded if your core tempurature is already high.  Better off doing a cold tub/packs for the soft tissue after a workout.

Now I love a good hot tub evey now and then whenever I'm sore.

I was thinking after a hard bike or run.  Yeah, you're right, ice is better on those sore spots...

I personally like the sauna after a hard workout. I use it to stretch my self out after a workout. Ill usually stretch for 5 minutes, then sit, and then stretch again for 5. I always bring a bottle of water in there with me too. I feel that it helps relieve the soreness and helps with getting rid of the lactic acid that builds up in the muscles.

I don't know about benefits to it, but I love hitting the sauna after my swim workout.  I only do it after a swim.  After a hard run or bike, I have no desire for it.

I only hit the Sauna after a swim workout to try to sweat out some of the chlorine from the pool. Plus I get to talk to some people who just go in there to relax. It is a good place to do some light stretches after my swim workout. I just can't stay in there much longer than 15 minutes.

I like the idea of using it to "sweat out some of the chlorine" from the pool! I hopped in the sauna yesterday after a 30 minute swim, and I could only do it for about 10 minutes. And I was doing some light stretches for the last half too. Thanks everyone!!
