So I hear that IMAZ next year are going to have GPS chips for the participants that you can track an althlete "Real Time" and find out where they are at any given time. Any one else hear about this? That is great if it is true but if IM doesn't do anything with their server being able to handle the amount of people using it it isn't worth much in my opinion. What are your thoughts? I'm sure there are several that had trouble with the slow server this year trying too track an althlete and trying to stay updated on what's happening.

Where did you hear about this?

I heard it from a guy that is a marshal at IM events. Obviously that doesn't make it so but just wondering if anyone else had heard. Why?

Did the front runners have them on? Because at the end of the race it showed their position on the big screen at the finish. I figured somebody was manualy updating their position or they had some sort of chip on.

It would be nice to have that service available. Especially for those IM courses that are one loop- like the the IM FL bike course.  Because you go HOURS and nobody knows where you're at, if something happened, if you're almost done, etc.  I'm all for it!

There was a flyer about it in the "junk mail" of the race packet. It said they are planning on having it for the 2008 November IMAZ. It was through a different company though (not NA Sports). I haven't unpacked my junk yet, so let me see if I can find it when I get home.

X2.  There was a post about this the other day but I think it might have gotten pulled or I just can find it.  It actually looks pretty cool but expensive if you want to buy (300-350, plus a monthly monitoring service) or your can rent for around $50 for an IM I believe.  I think it looks pretty cool espeically for SO to track you on training rides.

It would be really interesting if they did.  It would definitely have an effect on the front of the pack.  Having friends spectating with the ability to know EXACTLY where your competition is in relation to you at any moment and giving you that info.... that would be huge.

It would really help the IM live video coverage as well....with up to date tracking of who is gaining/losing and the exact splits would really enhance the video coverage and make it more spectator friendly. Maybe not hours of empty transition video anymore.

It think its basically a garmin type device that can be used for training as well...so its duel purpose not just for racing. Not sure how much garmin's cost...though...

The device they said should be 300-350 plus the monitoring service.  I did not realize that Garmin had one?  I have a 305 that I paid $150 for but I cannot send a signal.  But I agree it is a small gps type device that you wear on you somewhere.  I would love it for training so my wife could have peace of mind as to where I am on some of my rides.

$350 seems like a lot- not sure how much the monthly fee is.  Hopefully that wouldn't be too bad.

But...if you do a lot of races you can do the math and see that it would definitely be worth it.  Especially since you can wear it for training.  That itself would make it worth it- especially if you do long training sessions alone.  That's a great safety feature for others to track you.

And...how cool is it that it can map you on an OWS?  My only question is where would you wear it for the swim without losing it?  It says it's made to be worn on a race belt.

What will it cost?

We are expecting rental cost to be the following:

$20    -        Half Marathons

$30    -        Marathons & Half Ironman Triathlons

$40    -        Ultra-Marathons & Adventure Races

$50    -        Ironman Triathlons, Ultra-Ultra Marathons and multi-day events

For those that do multiple races a year and want to use it for training as well; we expect it to sell for $350 plus a monthly network and web services and fee.  We will post that amount shortly as we finalize that cost.

I was saying its basically like a garmin - not that garmin has a similiar device.

This appears to be waterproof, long lasting (IM), and mulitiple uses - training and racing. For some reason this interests me but not a garmin.

I emailed them and they said $17.99 a month which to me is way too much.

That would be $215.88 per year for the service- ugh.  I still really like the concept- I don't like the monthly fee though

I wonder if eventually the price might drop?  Especially if others get on the band wagon with this concept?

I personally wish Garmin would incorporate this feature into a waterproof model.  Then at least you'd get the package deal and not have to buy an additional electronic piece to wear during a race.

Agreed.  I would love it for training more than racing.  Especially since my wife worries when I ride.  She could go online see that I haven't moved in 20 minutes and then begin to really worry or if she needed to track me down she could do so pretty easily.  But for $300+ upfront and  $200 + a year she can keep worrying.  I really don't understand the monthly monitoring fee as I think that should be included with the price as I don't have to pay to use my garmin.

Where did you hear about this?

There was a flier in the April IMAZ race packet about it. I have tossed it though so don't ask me for details.

Guess we all need to decide what money we spend is worth it.

I am one of the testers of the unit. I have been using for a few months now and LOVE it.
I wore it at Boston, and all my family and friends were able to track me live during the race.
I got lots of notes back that they loved it.

I use my for training also on a daily basis which allows my wife to know where I am.

They are still working to get the final unit completed, and website completed.

But, I hope to wear the unit at the Auburn toughest half on 4/18. I will do the olympic distance
race. I expect to be on the bike with the unit on about 8 PST.
If you want to see how it works with a race in the sticks, which is perfect for involving the spectators, log into the website.

My unit is Dave Campbell.

I also plan to use at Worlds in Vancouver in June.

This by far is the best toy I have for doing exercise, bar none.

How do you figure that?  Does it give the athlete immediate feedback like a Garmin or cycle computer or power meter?  If it doesn't then I fail to see how it helps the athlete during training or racing.

Well, let me give you two examples.

I just used the device at the Auburn Oly distance race on Sunday. I setup
a computer at the finish line where Brad would be announcing at 5 AM,
and the boss dropped me off at the swim start. So, when she got back,
she was able to see my progress through the course, and did not have to stress out that
she would miss me coming into T2.

When I was out for my training yesterday, I did not have the device with me.
I had not told the wife what my training day would be like, since I never know until
I am doing it. So, while I was out running on my cross country loop, I kept thinking
that it is the pits to know the boss does not know where I am, and she gets worried.
Yep. as soon as I got home, the first thing she said is I have to wear the
MyAthlete.biz GPS unit so she knows what I am up to.

So, for many not worrying about their spouse, family or friends may be no big deal.
But, for myself, and many others I have talked to, this unit is a must to help minimize
the impact our training has on our families.

What's the word on availability of the My Athlete GPS? I originally heard June, but wondering as the website doesn't mention a date.

Yeah, but it really does not actually help the athlete in training.  It helps family members track the athlete which is great and I would love it.  Even the cost for the unit is not bad it is the extra monthly cost that is alot.  I would much prefer a "per minute" usage plan or something along those lines.
