Subject: Marathon at the beginning or end of the tri season?
This has been my first year competing in triathlons and racing in general. I started with a mini-sprint, sprint, Olympic (Aug 17), and a half marathon (Sept 27).

Next year I’ll probably stick with sprints and Olympics, but I would like to check off the “complete a Marathon” box as well. I’ve been looking at May (Vancouver or Calgary) or October (Victoria) Marathons. Any thoughts as to what date would work best. The beginning or the end of the tri season?

If you do it at the beginning of the tri season, your marathon training won't get in the way of your triathlon training, nor will your triathlon races get in the way of your marathon training.

If you do the marathon first you'll have a great running base too.  The only down side I can think of is if you get burned out from marathon training.

I'm with the bear on this one. I did one at the beginning of May and am currently training for an October marathon. The May race got me in great running shape for tri season, but my current training has kind of cut into swim/bike time (especially bike). I might have done better if I managed my time a little better, though.

Thanks for your thoughts. The overwhelming response has been the beginning of the season. So I guess a May Marathon is now in my plans.

Do what the bear says. Same thing I did this year and it worked out very well for building a solid running base.

1/2M Spring and full marathon in the Fall with a later season (July/Aug) HIM inbetween.

I'm on my 2nd year of this cadence and it seems to work well (although, this week I'm in HIM recovery mode).  The HIM training has certainly built a nice marathon "base" to work from.  Furthermore, the fall marathon, kept me honest in preparing for a HIM (several 2hr runs in the books), especially when it turns into a du with 15+ miles of running.
