Hi,

We are signed up.  Douglasville is just 20 minutes from Atlanta.  This is our first tri out here and I expect it will be a perfect one for a newbie.  Very informal and fun!  I know lots of non tri folks who are signing up to do it so hopefully they too will get bit by the tri bug.  The aquatic center and trails are all brand new and well maintained.  It will be a flat, fun course.  If you are one of the super fast top dawg types I recommend it as a chance to do a tri you might actually win!  Either way it should be fun!

Myself and two friends are in. It's being run in reverse, FYI, and the bike route is HILLY.

The run is flat, on the trails in Boundary Waters Park.

I was going to participate in the Lake Lanier tri, too, but then my nephew asked if he could do a tri with me.

I decided the Last Chance Tri would be a better way to introduce him to tri's while giving me piece of mind (ie: swimming in a lake with no experience)! besides, in october, the water might be cooler and i can't see him buying a wetsuit for that one event without knowing if he really likes them...

i'll be there, afrutoz, along with my 14yo nephew...

You can download the course maps here:

looks interesting...i've never done a pool tri...

Are they really doing the race in reverse? Might be worth showing up just to see what that's like..

I'm probably going to do this one. It is hard to pass up something 5 miles from my house.

Do you think wetsuits will be allowed? (don't laugh, I've actually worn mine in that pool a couple of times to get used to it - but always at lunch during the week so that no one else is there to see me.)

That pool can be almost ridiculously warm some days. It won't be an issue.

I was actually going to do the one at lake lanier also. BUT...my good friend was so proud of me (she's pregnant) and she talked about it so much unbeknowest to me - her sister asked me if I'd sign up and do this one with her.

 It's her first.

I felt honored so I said of course

<---still new at this

I should have had a smiley after my wetsuit comment. I almost roasted while trying it out in the pool.

I presume you are talking about the 5th of October. If so, the Emerald Pointe race is a great one! Super fast, and the swim is only 400 meters.

I am not sure if they will allow wetsuites, but last year the water felt great. A bit cool, but you are not in the water long.

My nephew and I are signed up now.

Starting the tri with a trail run should really be fun...especially if it's raining and/or muddy! Wouldn't want to be among the last to enter the pool, though. I wonder if they'll make you wash off in some kind of shower or something, since it is an indoor pool...

Question....if everyone shows up to swim the last leg at the same time and they have to do waves doesn't that given a rest period advantage to those in say wave#2? I think maybe the parks and rec department in Douglas County has it wrong?  It just seems odd boundary waters would let their pool get all dirty etc?

afrutoz,

I doubt there's going to be waves...

My guess is once you get to the pool, you dive in and go. I also am guessing that if a bunch of ppl get there at the same time, you will have to form a line and then pass them on the swim if you're fast enough...but i'm not sure. I don't think more than one person can "start" the swim at the same time, for safety concerns.

As far as the pool getting dirty, i'm thinking it will be filthy after the last person gets out since we start on a trail run...have you ever run a trail run in the morning? the dampness of the ground helps your ankles/shoes get really dirty. it wouldn't surprise me to see portable showers or tubs or something else set up so that you wash off a little before getting in...

but, i don't know...we'll see

Sir,

A few questions regarding the Last Chance triathlon.

1) Do you plan on posting a participant list?
2) What will happen if several triathletes arrive to the pool at the same time? Jump in and go? Waves?
3) Being that this is a trail run, you should expect that some triathletes will be extremely dirty by the time they get to the pool. Are they going to have to wash off before they get in the pool? or are they just going to be able to jump in and go?

I really appreciate your time and am looking forward to the triathlon.

Ronnie:

In answer to your questions:

1.  I won't be posting a start list.  I'll submit it to BWAC and they might.
2. We don't expect more than 125-150 participants and it will be pretty spread out by the time you get to the pool.  If there are several entering the pool at one time, the lanes are more than wide enough to pass.
3.  The trail is a pristine double-track.  Very smooth.  I've been over the course several times and came out "clean as a whistle".

Hope this helps - hope to see you there.

This is my first Triathlon and I'm looking forward to it.  The bike route is extremely hilly too.  Has anyone mapped the bike route?  I have mapped it out several times on mapmyrun.com and I come up with 13.25 miles everytime.  Isn't it supposed to be only 12 miles?  I know one mile isn't going to make or break it, but.  Is anyone else out there going to be on a mountain bike like I am?  That's what I've training on so I'll stick with it.  See y'all there.

I too mapped out the route on the route manager here in bt. It is over 13 miles and pretty hilly for me, too. I even zoomed in as far as i could and took TIGHT corners, to try and reduce the distance. The best I could do was a little over 13.

I'll be riding my MTB for this tri. As a matter of fact, just dropped it off at the LBS for a tune up. I think I saw those hard core cyclist in there laughing at my slick tires... I laughed right along with them, though...

Good luck on your first tri. It'll be fun. I'm looking forward to it, bigtime...

Hi Folks,

I rode the route last weekend and yes its got some hills.  I have a new Cervelo but I have decided I am going to ride my hybrid instead due to two factors A) the hills and B) the condition of the road on part of the race.  Its got some pretty loose gravel on it and rough road so I don't want to risk my tires.  I am still not 100% sure but I am leaning towards my slower bike for this one...

I have heard that the run course is hilly too.  This is going to be more challenging that I originally thought but its a fun course and I think there will be lots and lots of beginners which always makes it more fun.

For any first time folks out there PLEASE go to the USAT website and read the bike rules about passing, staying on the right etc.  The hills and the downslopes can be a lot of fun for good riders but could be dangerous if there are a lot of people doing illegal or unexpected things like riding in the middle or not passing correctly.  It will make first timers a lot more comfortable to know the rules and will make the race more fun for everyone!

Good luck everybody!

Brief Description:
This is the last triathlon of the N. Georgia season. The Boundary Waters Aquatic Center, arguably the most beautiful swim center in the U.S., is the host. The run is on the brand new (March 2008) trail system at the BWAC. Perfectly groomed, mostly flat double track trails. The bike course rolls through rural Douglas County and the swim is in the BWAC pool. 12 lanes that you will alternate from left to right with buoys throughout the swim. A FANTASTIC EVENT FOR FIRST-TIMERS!

Buoys in a pool? Huh?

OK, I am signed up for the Douglasville "Last Chance" and I will be driving down from Alpharetta bright and early Sunday morning. I had hoped to do Emerald Point but since it closed out before I signed up, I will be more than happy to close the season in Douglasville instead.  (Bonus:  no OWS on a 55-degree morning Laughing).  Anyway, this will only be my 2nd tri so I am looking forward to comparing this reversed format to the "normal" format.

Later,

MM
