We were looking at some ideas for the 2009 season and thought this may be attractive:

A three race "Gran Prix" series that used Ann Arbor, Waterloo and Clark Lake as a points/overall time compendium. Our race timers, Gault Racing, would score the events for overall placing within the standard five year age groups.

In other words, you register for and do all three races- Ann Arbor, Clark Lake and Waterloo. Based on your results and time you get scored relative to the others competing in the "Gran Prix" series.

We'd cook up some special prizes for the placings that would be a little nicer and more elaborate than just the individual age group awards at the races taken seperately.

Is this idea of a "Gran Prix" an attractive idea to you guys? I'm a big Formula 1 fan so I like the concept of a semi-on going points series.

Lemme know, good, bad or indifferent....

I really like the idea. There used to be a grand prix series in Michigan. That is what got me into the sport so heavily. It gets people doing more races in a season. A good idea would be if the series consist of 3 races offer some sort of package discount for registering for the 3 together. I know none of the 3 races you mentioned have attendance issues but it would make them even more popular. I have to say great idea.

I'm interested as well.  A 3 race series is a perfect number to fit busy schedules.

How about including a race over here on the west side?

I like the idea too!  I also agree that we could either add another race west side or Lansing area (Lansing Legislator)...

I like the idea, www.score-this.com does a series in WNY that is sort of like that, but they take best three of four. Not to make it more complex, but they did points for overall place and age group place for both spring and olympic races, with more weight on Olympic (obviously). So you could do all three sprint races and win if you placed really really well, but you could also place well overall by being a slightly lower placing oly distance racer. Figuring out how to play to your strengths was the hard part.

I would be very interested in a format like this. I raced mountain bikes this summer in the MSCPS, run by Tailwind enterprises, and it really gives you something to work for as you size up the competition throughout the season.
I know it would only be three races, though, but like someone already stated, it's great for the tight schedules we all probably have.
Would these events all take place on the weekends?
