Ok...Im starting to try to get organized for IM FL. I really need advice from those who have completed the IM distance. What is the one thing you wished you had put in your special needs bag?? Now...the following items don't count:

**new legs
**new lungs
**new feet
**another person to run the marathon
**bourbon
**morphine

Ive already thought of those!! Your imput would be greatly appreciated (and aside from the humor above, I really would like some SERIOUS commentary here!!!)

Thanks folks!!!

Well, I didn't leave anything out that I wanted in there... but I'm really happy I did the following:

For my bike special needs I packed extra Infinit in there. I wasn't sure if I would use it as I had enough hours in my water bottle, but packed it just in case. That saved my butt. By mile 80 my stomach really couldn't handle anything, so the gels and sport chews I had packed were not going to be eaten. I loaded up on the Infinit and used that as my nutrition till the end of the bike.

For the run, I packed new socks in my special needs bag. Foot saver! I was already carrying a travel size body glide on me (for anti-chafing on the go!)... and I had started with new socks, but with the heat and humidity, I figured it would be smart to change out at mile 13. Oddly my new socks gave me a blister at mile 6. I put on more body glide. Then at mile 13 I put on the new socks and more body glide. The blister never caused me any pain or issues. I only had 2 blisters (one popped up the next day) when it was all said and done.

Tums- I wish I had actually carried those with me on the bike and had them in T2 as well.

I had major reflux issue after the bike and I never had those problems during training at all.  The problem went away after drinking a lot of water (my tummy was really bloated too from all the Perpeteum), but it sure would have been nice to chomp on a few Tums.

From what I've heard about IMFL, if you plan on finishing late pack some extra clothes. In case its a cold day.

For both FL and LP I did not use a run special needs bag, nor did I stop for my bike ones during either.  For the bike I had packed extra CO2 cartridges, a spare tire (I use tubulars for my racing wheels and also had a spare on my bike), that was it for LP and I had a clif bar and extra bottles for FL.

There is so much available on the run course that other than maybe clothing there is nothing that you might need.

After my Tri Camp experience, I found I needed some caffeine around the time we would get to the special needs bags. Coke, Red Bull, whatever.

I had a five hour energy in both my bike and run SN bags and was very happy to have it there.

Did not have any SN bags at either of my IMs and did not have any regrets.  Everything I needed was available on the course.

The name "special needs" does not sit well with me.  I guess I'm just low maintenance.

what I wish I had in my bike special needs was some Tylenol or Allieve. I had a couple in my T2 run bag, but not the bike special needs,, I really needed some. at a few aid stations I was stopping and asking each person there if they had any.

For LP this year I didn't stop for either bike or run special needs as I was able to live off the course and didn't need the extra tubes and CO2.

The only thing I wish I had and would have stopped for was a rain coat for the bike bag.  The weather forcast was way off so I didn't even give it a second thought.  It hung on a hanger in the hotel room .

I tried something at IMKY that worked out well.  I use Perpetuem for a good protion of my nutrition on the bike.  I was going to use two bottle of 3-hour concentrated portions in each.  Unfortunately, it doesn't hande the heat well, and after a good 5 or 6 hours in the heat can get a little nasty for some.

I took a padded envelope (the kind with a thin bubble-wrap on the interior (office supply section of WalMart; $0.80) and two disposable cooling packs (first aid section, $1.40 each).  Just before dropping off SN bag on race morning, I put the bottle in the envelope, cracked the two cooling packs and stuffed them around the bottle, and sealed the top.  Voila -  Instant refrigerator!

At Bike SN, I just pulled out the envelop, pulled the tab to open the top and yanked the bottle out.  Very minimal time lost.  And let me say... a cold bottle fluids at that point tasted very good.

For run SN, the only thing I used was one of those micro, sample-size Body Glide sticks b/c the seams of my tri top had started chafing under the arms.  (I had done a quick Body Glide of my feet in T2 already and had no problems with my feet at all.)

How about an "inspirational note" that is in a Ziploc so it doesn't get all wet and mangled.  It should have only four letters - HTFU?

Actually, there were some participants that have put a note in which helped them get through.  A participant may have found one that a family member may have stuck in without their knowledge, and it helped them!

Not an Ironman, but I did volunteer at IM Wisconsin in T2 a few weeks ago. Here are some of the more intersting things I noted as I dumped some bags:

Eye drops and extra contacts
Q-tips
Bandaids/Blister aids - these were actually used a LOT
Toothbrush/toothpaste/water for brushing teeth
Gum, mouthwash and breath mints
CHAP STICK (used a lot)
Immodium
Fruit
Sweet potato
Cold ice bags or soft cooler bags to keep bottles cold
Athletic tape and scissors (for wrapping feet)
Potato chips (that spilled all over the floor)
Wet wipes and wet washcloths in ziplog bags
Trash bags (I assume this was in preparation for a rainy run)
Beach towels
The Stick leg muscle roller thingie - extensively used by the woman who packed it.
Variety of sunglasses lenses (clear, yellow, red, dark)
Inspirational messages (these seemed to really help the ladies I was with!)
Clothing options - long/short sleeves, tights, hat/visor, 2 kinds of shorts, 2 kinds of socks, rain jackets, etc.

A bit of advice from a volunteer standpoint... DON'T tape your bag shut or tie it in a crazy knot! I had to demolish a bag because it was taped shut, and the ones with crazy knots take a long time to undo, especially since volunteers are wearing rubber gloves.

Also, if you have a lot of "stuff" in your bag, just be warned that it will get "DUMPED." The ladies who had lots of small items not bagged and organized in ziplock bags had to spend significantly more time pawing through their stuff. I would try to organize for them (gels, pills, clothes in separate piles) but some has so much crap it was a huge task and added a lot of time to their T2.

pb&j (lots of peanut butter, needed the protein)
spare tube, and co2 just in case
salted peanuts
gummi worms
small coolers to keep the stuff cool and dry

I think they do a great job on the course with foods, so you really dont need to keep that much stuff in your special needs bags.
As for keeping cloths in them, remember you probably wont get them back. I kept the dry cloths
in my transition bag, that way i could change in the tent.

I don't mean to hijack this topic, but this question is somewhat related. I have yet to access a special needs bag on the bike or the run. This year at IMFL I plan on having a loaded fuelbelt in my run special needs bag so I can put the used one from lap 1 in and grab the loaded one. How much time are we looking at to get the bag and do the exchange. Is is a self service thing like at T1 and T2 or do they have it ready for you? Do you have to stop or can you dig while keeping going? Any info would be great.

I can not thank you enough for all the WONDERFUL advice!! I would have never thought of half the things you suggested. The cooler items are a GREAT idea, the pain relievers are a must, notes from family sound good (I did that last year for my best friend who ran the ironman..I simply put a picture of his son who past away from Leukemia the year before to remind him who the race was to honor...it definitely kept him moving!!) Rain coat...GREAT IDEA!! I hate the rain on the bike!

Again..these are awesome...keep them coming if you have more!!!

I packed my favourite training food which was not on the course...mini bagels. And of course, little packs of tylenol. Extra tire tubes for sure (which I used).

I should have packed tums for the run because I drank gatorade & ate salted boile potatoes, which I wasn't used to and felt like throwing up for most of the run after it. And body glide....becuase I'd left mine with the bike.

Ya know, some of those wet wipes would have been nice because my hands & face were so sweaty, and some kleenex for the dang runny nose in the cold.

Best of all...was the headlamp for running in the dark. When I was hallucinating & seeing mythicical creatures (which was really only people running with glow sticks or reflective clothing) it was really soothing to have a lamp with me. I'm scared of the dark, lol.

And warm clothing for after the sun sets. All I needed was my jacket...which I had in the SN bag.

I didn't need the extra socks & extra bottles of water, gels, power bars, and the chocolate covered stuff just got mushy as well. And, if you feel well enough after the IM...go to the beer store the night before & put it in the hotel room fridge, because the store might be closed before you are done & feel like celebrating. That's what we did...but we didn't drink a beer for three days after

Hi there
As a newbie to the sport and finisher of IMC in BC, I don't have alot of advise....but....be cautious of pain meds as they can really be harmful to already stressed kidneys especially if you take too many.

A jacket you don't mind loosing and of course in bike SN bag, anything like nutrition supplements , lyte powders are a must, along with co2 and tube for those just-in-case times.

In run SN bag, spare socks(I use the wigwam antiblister socks and foot cream, and never have foot issues anymore), head lamp and A TREAT!! You don't have to use or even collect the bag. In my case, I collected my SN bag on the run and took out a couple of items. I really was able to make one man's day better, too, by giving him my unopened and well padded Starbucks Frappucino! I was feeling good without my treat and this gentleman was having a long day and really was very grateful...so, it was truly worth it!!

Just remember, you don't get the items back...shop at thrift stores for clothes you might leave in the bags(ie jackets). You will find amazing sports clothes in these shops and you won't mind leaving the item unclaimed if you have paid $5.00 for a Nike sport jacket!!

One thing I did that worked well was in my T1 And T2 plus SN bags I sorted everything by category and put them in 1 or 2 gallon ziplock bags.

I had the stuff I knew I would need in one, stuff I might need in another so when the volunteers dumped my bag crap didn't go all over the place. It made it easier to work through and really saved me time.

Plus IMLP didn't have enough racks so my T1 and T2 bags were on the ground over night in the rain. IMFL they are on the ground as well and with dew who wants their socks or running shoes wet.

In run special needs put some food in there that you love. I had about 10 things..by that point you may be tired of what is on the course. I picked pita chips and peice of gum out of mine. Plus arm warmers. Back up options of nutrition, extra insole of running shoes and clean socks with small towel to wipe them off and bandaids.

I had 6 bike jackets in my hotel for various conditions and two PVC ones in T1 and T2.  With the weather forecast so far off, I didn't choose to bring them with me and what I had in T1 I didn't take as showers at LP always pass. I wish I had picked up a cheap $2 plastic rain coat at Walmart that folds up very small to leave in both sn bags just in case it rained.

I put in some pain killers and salt pills into ziplock bags that went into both transition bags and both special needs bags.  Was very happy to have them.  Also, I now keep all my old bodyblide sticks.  When they get down to the last few uses don't throw them out.  They are great for throwing in all 4 bags you will need to fill for IM.  Better than buying new sticks.

One thing to consider about a headlamp is that it could break with all the other bags around it.  Some of those bags may have a heavy water-bottle and could smash the light.  Just something to think about.

Good point about the headlamp...wrap it in something soft, like a jacket or the socks....???

Mine didn't break, but my IM was a very small event, only about 75 participants for the full. So I guess I was spoiled in that way...plus we were almost-guaranteed our SN bags back at the end, which did happen, thankfully.

Lots of good tips and advice here and I'd definitely recommend putting a treat in your bag and organizing and such into Ziplocs the one thing I haven't seen mentioned is to make a medicine pack. Not just Tylenol or just Tums but actually put together a pack. Here's what I did for my 2 IMs:

Get a package of pill baggies. They are mini ziplocs. In mine I put:

2 salt tabs
4 Tylenol 8 Hour
2 Immodium
2 Benedryl
2 Tums
2 Gas-X

Put one of each pill bags in all of your bags so you have a baggie in T1/T2 and both SNs.

I made a baggie that has only salt and Tylenol and put it in my Bento Box since I was taking Salt Tabs in with my Uncrustables.

Have fun, enjoy the day and smile a lot!
