Subject:IMKY 2009 ...what are your other races before this one?
For those of you (us ) that have registered for IMKY 2009, we know the date. How many of you plan to do a HIM in 2009, and when. IDEALLY, when would be the best time to do one, knowing that the purpose is not really to RACE it, but it is all part of training for IMKY. I'm interested in knowing what other races you have planned before IMKY, and why. (I know some of you may have races strictly for fun, while others use the races as part of the IM training plan - and yes I know it can be both.) I plan to use a BT plan, and follow it a LOT better than my training for my 1/2 this year, but not sure on what races to add in, and when. The only thing I know for sure about myself is my first marathon planned for this December. Looking forward to seeing what everyone has to say.

Next year I plan on doing Mooseman the first week in June and then shorter stuff prior to IMKY. Last year I did Lonestar in March and Patriot in early July before doing IMKY. I think it all depends on what you plan is (e.g. are you following a set plan or is a coach creating one for you that can accomidate additional longer races) and how quickly you recover.

Next year, I only really have 2 races on my schedule: American Triple-T and IMKY. Triple-T wraps up with a HIM and it is on Memorial Day weekend.
The advantage of "racing" a HIM before you IM is that you really want to work on your long-distance pacing and your nutrition. That is what I did with Eagleman prior to IMWI in 2007 and it worked well.

I'm thinking about doing the GCT HIM in May. Not sure yet....but's I think it comes at a good time relative to IMKY. It will test my 'base' and spring training and be a good segue into full IM training for June/July.

I`m thinking of Rhode island 70.3 on July 12 09. this is 6 to 7 weeks before IMKY so I think it will fit nicely. It also works with my vacation plans to visit eastern Canada this summer. I will scoot down to Rhode island then head up the NovaScotia for a week or two.
I will be doing a full marathon in Ottawa at the end of May as well. Might do a couple small tris as well.

Buffalo springs 70.3 will fit in well with your training schedule. I think Sydney and David B both did that one... I"m not sure what time the one in New Orleans is put I want to say that Tommy is also doing that one, so I would imagine that it fits into the training schedule also..

Yes. I have New Orleans 70.3 in April. For me, next year will be divided into two buildups - one for New Orleans and one for IMKY. BSLT is about 8 weeks out. That's a good one to do as training for IMKY. I may do BSLT. Ideally, (IMO) a HIM about 5 weeks out is perfect. Then go into a 4 week taper.

Not sure what I will do in May and June but July will find me at Muncie for the 1/2 and then I do an all out focus for IMKY including at least one trip to Louisville to ride the course....
maybe May 17 in Kentucky for a 1/2 and then the Kansas 70.0...then Muncie, etc.

I think I will be doing Spirit of Racine again. It is in July which will allow for good recovery and more importantly it is close and cheaper than Ironman run events. Only $95.00! I think if I keep adding costs to this Iron thing my wife will kill me.

I know last year I read that Headfirst Sports put on a half in Kentucky using parts of the actual course in mid July. I saw the bike course was a lot the same and you swim in the lucious waters of the Ohio River.

I am on the fence for what to do next year. I love Steelhead 1/2 but it is the first weekend in August which would leave 4 weeks. I seem to recover fast which it would work but I am looking at Muncie or even the one down in Louisville.

St. Croix 70.3 and probaly throw in another Half. Trying to qualify for Clearwater/Kona whichever one comes first! Will also look at doing Long Distance Nationals after IMKY in Oct.

May 2009: Bikesource Sprint Triathlon
June 2009: Kansas 70.3
July 2009: Shawnee Mission Long Course
July 2009: Vineman 70.3
August 2009: IMKY
September 2009: Redman Half Ultramax Championships
The only thing that might change is Vineman, just depends if I can find one closer to do in July instead of going all the way to California, although I would love to go and do that one.

Correct. They announced this about 3 weeks ago. Redman is the Ultramax National Half Championship next year. It is going to be a 3 city rotation. . .

That is awesome. I did the full last year and loved it. I want to go back someday. Hopefully this will keep it around and grow the races. Enjoy it, it is a great venue for a race.
