Anyone, besides me, racing this Sunday in the Jerseyman?  I'm doing the sprint course.

Half here.

How will you guys handle the weather? I've ran races in bad weather, but never tri-ed.

weather started off as 47 and rainy...last I heard was 52 and overcast...have you heard anything different.  Only my second tri, and I haven't ridden in the rain, since I was a kid.

I rode in the rain, very fun.... but not in racing mode. Meaning I was going slow to avoid slipping. But never swam in the rain.

I've done all three in the rain, but like you, never in racing mode.  It'll be interesting if nothing else.  I'm more worried about freezing than falling on the bike.

Freezing... hmmm... I shiver just by thinking about getting out of the water, all wet, and getting on the bike course against chilly winds. My mind still refuses the idea of wearing winter clothes in September.

I bought toe warmers and arm warmers today, will be wearing my wool hiking socks (they work great for winter running), and will have two layers of Under Armour shirts on (one compression and one regular).  I also will be wearing a skull cap to keep my head warm, since about 50% of body heat is lost through the head.

All I have been thinking about is getting out of the water (which will probably be warmer than the air), being wet, and having to ride (hence creating breeze) on damp roads. ICK!

I see long T1's in our future as we bundle up before heading out.

Updated weather looks better. Be careful about being too warm. Racing mode generates lot of heat. I will be racing the half. Hopefully see some of you in transition. Have a great race and have fun.

Despite all this weather, I'll also probably go light. There might be moment in the wind gusts when I'll hate it, but over so many hours I don't want to get too hot.

And is that Renee from Sandy Hookers?

Is there any BT meeting planned? I'll be the tall guy in a yellow Jersey Shore Tri Club jersey who can't swim :-)

Kagoscuba, the beach is nice, I did the Skylands Tri 2 weeks ago, starting at the same beach. The water was clean, although all this rain might have stirred the dirt. I can't wait, I"m getting into freaking out mode.

I did the HIM.  Blew the run and was to reserved on the bike because the rain.  Oh well next year, maybe.  I did still place 25th overall and 4th AG.  Not bad after 19th away from the sport.

You can got to my race report to read about my views on it.  I can sum it up like this:  It was pretty much a self-sufficient race.  I thought safety was compromised on the swim (not even closet to enough volunteers), but overall I did enjoy the race and loved the bike course.

My report is at:

I'm very happy with how I did, but it was the worst organized race I ever did.

My report is at:

http://runningfort3.blogspot.com/2008/09/jerseyman.html

I'm very happy with how I did, but it was the worst organized race I ever did.

Great write up, and I could not imagine what it felt like coming in from the HIM and no one was around.  It was desolate enough after the sprint.  Of course the weather did not help for people hanging out either.  I'm also sure lots of racers with small children, like me were there solo, as their families said, "you might be crazy enough to not come inside from the rain, but we are not!"    With no friends or family there, I finished, walked to transition, packed my stuff, and walked to my car to go home.  I was gone within ten minutes of finishing my race.  Weird.

I actually felt bad for the RD, as he looked very stressed, and I learned today about 40 volunteers bagged the race on him.  That's a lot of adversity to overcome on the day of the race.  As far as the race itself, I enjoyed the swim, bike, and run...well, maybe not the run so much.

Chris - liked your essay and pics - Rob (my son) read and enjoyed it as well.  I am considering JM in spite of the problems but I have to get through a few other stepping stones first before deciding which HIM(s) (if any) to tri next year.  bob

Bob, check my other thread about east coast HIM's... I'm also researching now. Got it narrowed to about 4.
