I'm coming from the other direction in that I just recently gave up my iPod while riding and running.  I figured that if I couldn't use it during a race, I'd better get used to not using it at all.  It sucks without it

I use it until about two weeks out from the race.  With the race being that close, I don't have a problem being motivatd to run without tunes.

I train with mine on the bike and run, and have no problem racing without it. YMMV.

I use my iPod on maybe a third of my runs (never on the bike). When I first started running I always had the iPod but I knew I'd have to ween myself off of it for races. The first time I ran without the iPod was during a brick, and I was halfway through the run before I realized I didn't have it. Now I never miss it on runs, but I do enjoy running to music so I'll listen to it sometimes. I never use an iPod on long runs or pace runs or any other "important" runs.

So I guess I'm saying it doesn't have to be all or nothing.

I use it on runs, just to have a nice back-beat to keep pace to. I think I'd die without it during the marathon training - running by yourself gets boring, esp. if you are limited as to routes that you can run. During a race, there is stuff to look at, people to pass, etc. So I don't really miss it.

I use my iPod in all my training runs...but only had one strictly running race that allowed them.  I haven't missed it once.  When I'm training, it's just me and my brain and it needs distracting so it can't convince me to quit, or focus on pain, or time, or how much is left....when I'm racing, well, my motivation is that finish line, I have adrenaline, and I also have the distractions of other racers, course entertainment, etc., and have found I don't need it then...if you like to train with it, do it.  I'm not addicted to it in that I can't race without it.

I agree with never using it on the bike (IMO it is too dangerous), but I do use it on most of my runs.  About once a week I run without it as "practice."   As for races...well the only race I have "run" was a super sprint tri...and I was so into the event and all of the other competitors that I didn't miss it.  Conversely I come from a swimming  background so I am used to not having music while racing so I guess it did not seem that odd to me.

I never have music when working out. I like to focus on what I'm doing without distractions. Whether or not it was allowed in races has no impact on my choice. All that noise pounding in my ears would just irritate me.

I've done 8 hour screen lines and observation posts in a helicopter where the only break is refueling. Got used to not having anything but vibration and noise around me for long periods of time.

IPods and similar just annoy me, I cannot hear what's going on around me so I end up turning it off anyway

When I have to run on the treadmill that is the point of the ipod...I have an annoying neighbor that insists on watching the fox news channel full blast while running...drives me nuts! So I but in my sound eliminating headphones and crank up the tunes!

I do all my training runs with my iPod and when I am riding on a trail closed to motorized traffic I ride with it as well.  I don't miss it a bit in races.  Everyone is different tho gotta dow hat works for you

The only problem I have with mine is I run too fast and burn out when I am cranking live Rush.  oh and Scorpians The Zoo.  Love the Doors Soft parade on the bike....

Really I do find myself changing pace to the music.  However on the longer songs, like Hendrix doing Bob Dylan, Like a Rolling Stone live at Monerty.  The Outlaws doing Green Grass and High Class, I try to see how far I can run in that song.

BTW last night a version of Turn Around with Eric Clapton alongside Tracey Chapman, good ending song.

One more comment, my 7 year old on the treadmill: America A horse with no name, SandMan, Bob Dylan Tangled up and Blue, The backyardigans I'am not an egg anymore.  That's her CD I play for her.  She walks, smiles and knows the words to Bob Dylan.

I tend to run alone at night, so no ipod.  None on the bike either, I like being able to hear what's around me.

I lost my armband for my ipod at the gym 2 weeks ago and have had some of my best runs since not using it.  Can't really explain why...  although I think it may be I am concentrating on what I am doing a bit more.  Maybe it is just mental.

Skip it. It is a waste. Running should help do one of two things: 1. clear your head, 2. have crazy thoughts racing around.  Either way why ruin that?

Same here. Listening to my breathing is very meditative and I prefer running where I'm not jostled out of it too much: no stoplights, no traffic, not too many other people, and no iPod. The only time I wear the iPod for running is on the treadmill at the gym--for the same reason: no one will talk my ear off. Sometimes I don't even have anything on.

I use my IPOD in all of my training runs and in races.   It is usually on pretty low, but it helps keep me focused and motivated in tough points in running races.  I would not think of wearing it on the bike though, simply too dangerous.
