Subject: Enough Rest?

I started a thread about the long term effects of working out...it made me think about another subject...

Do i get enough rest? i know i don't. my usual rest period is 6 hours or less, even if i'd had a HARD workout...i know i should be resting longer, but i just can't... blame it on the kids, the sun, the wife (ahem), or any other factors, i never get to sleep longer than 6 hours (maybe 7 once or twice).

I wonder how much better my progress would be if i slept more than 8 hours a night?

What do some of you folks think? anyone start out with shorter rest periods and then "progess" to longer rests? did you notice a big difference in results?

I generally need more than 6 or 7 hours, but any more than 9 and I'm pretty much worthless.  I have to worry about sleeping too much instead of too little, if left alone I still can easily sleep 12+ hours.

Everyone needs different amounts of sleep.  I say sleep as long as you need to feel reasonably rested.

The only time I've slept for 8 hours in one night in the past, literally, 25 years was the couple of days I had pneumonia. Other than that I sleep for 4-6 hours a night with benadryl and 2-4 hours a night without. I'm not tired during the day and the more or longer I work out, the less I sleep.

I'm hoping when I start in on the HIM/IM training plans I'll be able to sleep more/longer but I've got to say that having 18-20 hours a day to do stuff is a lot of time

I feel much better with more sleep. This fall, I've been trying to build in a couple of days a week when I get a full 8 hours, which feels quite luxurious. This is usually after a two workout day.

I sleep 10-4 every night.  I might get up once in a while with the baby, but as long as I eat right and train, I feel grrrreat!!!

I sleep about 11-5:30 every day and as long as I do not go much under that time I do great. I think your body will tell you if you are sleeping enough. Thee last week or so I have been sick and sleeping till 7 ish. This morning I woke up with no alarm at 6. I do sleep totally by feel. If you feel ok don't worry about it.

Everyone is different, and you are likely to get a lot of "I only need 4 hrs" comments from the hardcore crowd.

However, I used to believe that and now I'm convinced that 8 hrs is the way to go.  If you need an alarm clock to wake up, I don't think you are getting enough sleep.  You can ck my logs (I include sleep hrs) and you'll notice that I have better workouts when I get more sleep.

I am a big supporter of sleep. I sleep exactly 8 hrs every night, but during IM training I would try to do 8:30-9 hrs (if I could, it was really hard sometimes, because some nights I was in bed at 8 p.m. just to get up at 4 a.m....really tough to get to bed by 7 p.m.). During IM taper, I tried really hard to get that extra hour of sleep.

They say if you fall asleep in less than 7 minutes, you're probably not getting enough sleep. People can't function well with just 4 hrs of sleep. They think they can, but they would be better off with more. They're just not aware of the effects the lack of sleep is having on them....

When I had an unusual week and got about 8 hours sleep instead of 6-7, I had better workouts.  I try to get more sleep, but when things get hectic, I tend to get 5-6 hours sleep.
