I have just finished a run themed week in my training program
(from this site
) for a HIM in december in NZ. Actually, it was supposed to be a swim themed week but I have swapped the position of the run and swim themed weeks to fit in with personal circumstances. But I digress...
Before I continue please know that I have had shin splints in the past, and have been to a podiatrist and been checked out, stopped running for a while and have been slowly building it back up. Shoes are about 6 weeks old, professionally selected and fitted with podiatrists blessing. No recurrence of shin splints so far. I stretch and ice when I finish runs and am receiving "The Stick" by courier tomorrow so will use that for more massaging. I get professional massages on my calves
(mostly, sometimes upper legs
) every two weeks. My logs are up to date if you want to check them.
So yesterday finished the week with a 90 minute run, along flat roads, out and back about 14km total. Where I could I ran on grass verge, sometimes concrete, sometimes asphalt
(splits - 50% grass, 25% concrete 25% asphalt
).
During the run I got an occasional sharp pain in my lower inner leg, in the middle of the calf muscle. It was jsut like a stabbing that lasted a second and then went away - no lingering pain or other sensation. I put it down to landing on a funny angle or something as I ran
(like on a stone or something
).
I felt great afterwards, stretched, showered, and then went with friends and sat in hot pools for half an hour to relax
(we were on a mini weekend break away
).
BUT...since then, every now and then - maybe every half an hour or so - I get a sharp pain back in the left calf. Comes and goes in a second. No lingering, and I feel great otherwise - even jogged a bit to catch some friends this morning, felt normal, no stiffness, nothing out of ordinary.
The pain doesnt come as a result of any particular action, for example, just sitting in the car this afternoon, not moving at all, it come - BANG - and left again, in a couple seconds. I hadn't even moved!
What is this? Driving me crazy, I hope nothing serious! Please help!
