Will the men's race will be a dogfight to the finish line among the big guns, or will someone step up and surprise the field?

Which woman will be the queen of Kona in 2008?

I think Normann Stadler or Andy Potts will win in the mens group

Chrissie Wellington for the ladies!

Potts or Macca for men.

Since McGlone and Jones are out, it will be a tough call for anyone to beat Wellington.

No surprises; Wellington is the obvious runaway favourite for the women.

I don't think Macca will repeat. There won't be any surprises in the men's field; there are any one of about 10 men who could pull it off right now, but I'm going to go with the Nominator. Not that I particularly like him. He's just hungry enough.

Can't speak to the men's race, but what's this about McGlone and Jones being out??  Did I miss the news.  And where's Badmann, did her shoulder recover?  I was hoping for Jones to recapture the win from 2006.

And even if Natascha is 100%, I am afraid she has past her peak and will have trouble keeping up with the young guns.

She is always my sentimental favorite though so I hope she does race and kicks butt!

Yep, Chrissie Wellington, although watch for Joanna Lawn, she is strong and peaking well.

Men - Macca or maybe Cam Brown this year?

Jones will be racing the Longhorn 70.3 this Sunday...so, it's not like she pulled out due to major injury or anything.

opps, double, don't you hate it when that happens...okay, so on the guys end...I think someone like Macca or Stadler will take it.  I would LOVE to see Andy Potts go all out and pick it up, and I think he'll be close, but I bet he's a bigger favorite next year.

Wellington without a doubt

I thin Macca take it again this year. I really can't wait for the race, I'll be in front of my computer all day!

Jones will be racing the Longhorn 70.3 this Sunday...so, it's not like she pulled out due to major injury or anything.

Press Release
For Immediate Release
Monday 22nd of September 2008

Over the weekend whilst competing in the Ironman 70.3 Cancun Michellie Jones was forced to withdraw whilst in the lead on the run because of a slight tear in her right calf.

With great regret Michellie has also decide to withdraw her entry from the 2009 Ford Hawaii Ironman World Championships in Kona.
In a statement released today Michellie has this to say;
"One of things that I learnt from my disastrous defence of my Ironman World Championship title last year in Kona is that the Hawaiian Ironman is not a place to be unless you are 100 percent. I am really looking forward to coming back to Kona in 2009 with avengence. I am extremely disappointed and would like to sincerely thank all my Sponsors and Freinds
for their support."

Once the injury is resolved Michellie plans to race several more long course events to finish out the season.

Craig Alexander and Wellington

Dont forget Crowie's debut performance last year!! He was very inexperienced last year. Now I think he is going to have more of a game plan. I like Andy Potts and would want him to win but I just think he is going to crumble under Kona conditions.

I would like to see Norman take the title for the male field and in the female field i would like to see Fernanda Keller , but her chances are very very low....

Maybe cause were in the States, and not saying I wouldn't love to see it, but I am shocked at how many think Potts can win it. Maybe I am wrong but I believe this is his first go at the distance and with the likes of Macca, Alexander, Normann, Al Sultan, whew I would be blown away if he could hang with them.

I am for sure rooting for him or my fav American Michael Lovato.

Women? Hard to go against Wellington, but the gambler in me says to take the field. Those lava fields bring many surprises.

I'm a huge Crowie fan, he is definitely one of my faves.  But Macca will again be hard to beat and Potts has the "what the heck, let's see what I can do" attitude and the speed to boot.

I really, really, really want a lottery pick to win it, but that is probably not going to happen. So, I guess if I was a betting man, I would pick Wellington for the women and Alexander or Stadler for the men.

Wellington and probably Macca. My head kinda says Alexander, but Macca was so cool showing up and speaking to the Disney team at Malibu that I can't bet against him...

Really hoping Wellington wins the womens race, so that maybe the media here in the UK  will finally take some notice of Ironman.

Probably Macca for the men's.

Honestly? I don't care who wins. I love watching it every year and I'll be happy with the outcome no matter what. I like to see the favorites come across first, and I also like to see the underdogs take the podium [the Olympics was a real great one for that]. The thing I'm most looking forward to is being able to watch AND record it in a good quality since we have A) Satellite TV vs. rabbit ears, and B) a DVD recorder [that works now, thanks to bigfuzzydoug and his bigfuzzybrain]!

I'd like to see Maca and Norman really go at it this year since Norman had troubles last year with keeping fluids down and DNF'd. I think it would have been a much better race had he been there to shake things up on the bike so hopefully they'll both have good races. That being said... I'd like to see Alexander run them both down and pass them in the last 2 miles of the marathon for the win.

In the women's race I'd like to see Natascha and Wellington go at it since Natascha crased out of the race last year and DNF'd. I think it could have been a different race last year (probably w/ same result however) if she hadn't had crashed out. That being said... I'd like to see Kate Major run them both down and pass them in the last 2 miles of the marathon for the win.

But it will probablty be Maca and Chrissie I just want it to be close with top 3 within 5 minutes of each other. Hey we can dream....
