Subject: Century & Marathon 3 weeks out?

Hi,

I am probably going to do a century ride in Raleigh-Durham on Nov 1st, 3 weeks out from IMAZ. Thing is, there is a marathon the very next day, which would make for an awesome training weekend. Logic is telling me that it's too much training, but my spirit wants to do it. What do you all think?

I could do the half marathon of the race, but that's cutting the planned run down a bit. Also, I am already on the schedule for the Baltimore Marathon, 6 weeks out. I am scheduled for a 5 hour marathon in Baltimore, which is 1:15 over my normal marathon. That should help with overtraining. I could approach Raleigh the same way maybe.

Which could still be asking for being overtrained for IMAZ?

I appreciate all comments.

Thanks!

I would do the century if worked logistically. No way would I do a Marathon 3 weeks before an IM. I wouldn't see it as a overtrained issue but a fatigue going into IM concern. But that is just me.

I wouldn't do either of the marathons, as they'd be too close to IM for me. The risk of injury and the recovery time after a marathon is too great, even if you're just taking it slowly. Generally, I don't think you need to do an open marathon to be prepared for an IM marathon.

I do not know how others have done it. 3 weeks and 4 weeks out are my highest volume weeks. In my build to IMLou 3 Weeks out Saturday 112 Mile ride @ 6 hours, with 1 Hour Run off the bike total volume 7hrs 3 min. Sunday 1hr30Min ride, with 20 mile long run total volume 4hrs 30min.

4 weeks out 6hour ride, 1hour run off the bike. Sunday 1hr30min ride, followed by 19 mile run @ 2hrs 53min.

I would do the century on saturday with a brick run, and a 20 miler on sunday. I would not do the marathon on sunday. The last 10k of a marathon are what will make you hurt and be difficult to recover from.

I have done 4 IM's and would have no problem with the century 3 weeks out.  I would not do a marathon 6 weeks out, but that's just me.  IMO a marathon 3 weeks out will effect your IM performance.

What I do not understand is why you would want to run Baltimore in 5 hours when you could do it in 3:45.  For me, the biggest risk with running comes from a "time on your feet" issue instead of a "speed" issue.   If you are going to run the marathon why would you beat yourself up 1:15 longer than needed?

Thanks for all the tips everyone, it confirms what my head was telling me but my heart wouldn't listen. :-) Do the century, but not the marathon.

For Baltimore this weekend, I am doing 5 hours because I'm set up to help with a pacer group. I asked for a slower time than my norm 3:45-3:50 because I figured it wouldn't tear up my body as much. It also allows me to not train to "race" the marathon, and stay more focused on IMAZ. I'm sort of committed to Baltimore right now, so at worst it'll be an experiment I can learn from. Before IM training, it's not unusual for me to do marathons in back to back months or even 2 weeks apart at times. The 2 weekers aren't very fun but a month apart has seemed to work out or even made me faster. Yea, IM is a whole lot longer though. :-)

Do both and then tell us how you feel afterwards. . that was we will know for sure if it is too close to the IM.

Way too much on your plate if you want to get to AZ rested and ready.  Maybe do Baltimore Saturday, and the century can be your last long ride before AZ.  No way in hell I'd back to back a century and a marathon in a weekend three weeks out.  That is just asking for problems.

I ran B-More last year (as I have the last 4 years) as my last big workout before IMFL and planned on running an easy 3:30-ish pace.  Problem was that I didn't run that pace at all ....... I got rambunctious and ran a 3:15 and another BQ.  Was I recovered for FL three weeks later?  I think so, but it definitely was not the smartest thing to do by any stretch ........

Yeah that is the danger with planning on using races as LSD long runs, it's hard to hold back. At least with Baltimore I am forced to do 5:00. I will be between 4:59:01 and 5:00:59, I can guarantee you that. Otherwise I get screamed at. :-)

Ok it sounds clear, I'm not doing the other marathon 3 weeks out. :-)

I'll let you know how I feel at my IM in 3 weeks after doing a marathon this weekend. I think it depends on your training load and how your body recovers. The century ride at this point in your training shouldn't take too much out of you as long as your nutrition is on. It sounds like you're a runner and recover well, judging by your doing 2 marathons in 2 weeks in the past.

You could always meet the century ride at the 50 mile mark too.

You could do the half-marathon as a supported training run.  If it's too short, warm-up for a few miles first...
