Subject: Anyone ever experience knee pain after running a mile or two?
I have been experiencing pain on the outside of my knee after running about a mile or two. I was wondering if anyone has had this and what did you do to fix it? I have built up muscle around the knee but that did not help. I am wondering if a cortisone shot is necessary?

It could be a number on things.  For me, it was ITBS.  As you'll probably hear at least a few more times, get an appointment with a good sports doc and for now stop running.

Good luck.  I hope it goes well for you.

My knee pain was ITBS too.  I worked with a PT and did lots of foam rolling, stretch and leg strengthing stuff.  It did take a while to go away!

Yes! And Lord knows what it is. I've been diagnosed with all sorts of things. I am getting ready to go to a REAL sports dr, though--as suggested by people on this board. I am sure that you'll get the same thing! But, for now, ice, avoid hills, and stress like here's not tomorrow! Depending on how much it hurts, you might want to cut back on the running.

Yeah, see a (good, sports) doc.  ITBS is a reasonable guess, but it's a guess.  Pain after 1-2 miles for a reasonably trained person is an injury (or impending injury) of some sort.  It could help to know whether there are conditions that do NOT bring it on.  For example, does it happen on an elliptical trainer?  Does it depend on pace?  Terrain?

ITBS is my guess. But Def have a doctor check it out. They can give you some good PT excercises and stretches to help you out. Cut back the running. If you feel any pain stop running.

Thanks for the advice. I only get this pain when I run and run at a fast pace. When I bike or do the eliptical machine, I never have any problems.

I went on Youtube and typed in ITBS and found numerous videos on stretching. I'll try that out but will also see a doctor.

Thanks!

I would also look at your running shoes. I get knee pain in the same area after a couple of miles when mine need replacing. Did you get fitted for your last pair?

You can tell what part of your knee hurts?  You are lucky.  I ache almost everyday, from my scalp down!  So far, the sparse remnants of my chlorine stained hair don't hurt.  But beside that, I am a cesspool of pain!

I don't know how long you have been running but I use to have the same thing. I won't bore you with the details but I had knee pain almost exactly at 1 mile runs. I went to the doctor and they didn't have anything other than saying I could have it scoped, which I didn't want to do.

I just slowly kept increasing the mileage and the pain went away.

I would check with a doctor first - but it worked for me.

Train harder! The endorphins make the pain go away!

I agree about the shoes!  I always know when I need a new pair b/c my knee bugs me after a mile or two.

yup - currently!!!!  Mine started in early July - and it ruined the last half of my (first) triathlon season.  I am still rehabbing from this (and tennis elbow that I got at the same time!).....

I have spent well over $2000 on physio, chiro, new orthotics...and more recently deep tissue sports massage, in the past 3 months (none of it covered).  The ONLY thing that made any difference for me was the massage - I am hooked now and go every two weeks.  It hurts like h-e-l-l though - brings tears to my eyes!

I tried ART and GRASTON for about 6-8 weeks at my chiro - did nothing - actually things got worse....at the beginning I could run 14-17 minutes before knee pain....stop running and pain went away....by 6-8 weeks I could only run about 8-10 minutes max and my knee pain would linger for days....  The past 3 or 4 weeks I have been running 15-20 minutes with no knee pain - I have not tested my knee(s) - it is both for me although right is worse - further because I am not in a real hurry to be having knee pain again...and I am not doing any more races until next year anyway....so don't need or want to push it.

eta:  and yes it was ITBS for me -and it sure sounds like that is what it is for you too!

i had a similar problem after i had taken a month off of running and tried to jump back in. it seemed to help to run up hills, but at a slower pace. also, quad extensions helped in my case.

visiting the doc is a good start, but if they don't help try to see what makes it worse and what makes it better and do the things that make it better. Don't do the things that make it worse.

I have no idea if a cortisone shot would help, but a shot of makers mark certainly would

Stretch, get a foam roller and see a PT that specializes in triathlon or running. You do need a medical opinion to verify the problem and check for other possibilities. I have not had any luck at all with regular doctors. IMHO they are good for diseases, not sports injuries. You want someone who is used to seeing what mucles, tendons and bones do together to make the body move appropriately. For this, I have found that for me a good physical therapist, personal trainer, experienced sports massage person, or chiro is very very helpful. If you can build an ongoing relationship so much the better.

I get an achy right knee (outside) when doing longer than 6 miles or during long rides.  Nothing too serious yet.  I have started using the foam roller thingy and some ITB stretches to see if helps.  So far, so good.

I used to have the same problem.  I started running about 4 years ago and everything was totally fine.  After about a year of running, I started to get horrible pain in my knee after a pretty short distnace, usually about a mile or 2 just like you.  This made me stop running all together.  Eventually I ended up tearing my meniscus in a completely unrelated incident, but told my doctor that I was interested in doing tris.  He told me that I would have to strenghten my quads and all would be ok.  I seemed to be ok at first, but the pain came back after a few weeks of running semi-regularly.  I tried braces and all sorts of other things, but it would not go away.  I finally went into a running store to look into a new pair of shoes since I was going on a trip that would involve a lot of walking.  They looked at the pair I had been wearing and told me that those shoes were my problem.  I got fitted for a much better pair of shoes, and low and behold, after breaking in the new pair, the knee pain practically disappeared.  Then after a few months the pain came back.  The shoes were pretty well worn out by this point, so I went back and bought the  same pair of shoes and after breaking them in, no more pain.  I still can't believe after all this time how much of a difference a correctly fit shoe can affect your knees.  Anyways, I am now a happy runner and have no issues running intervals at the track or longer distance like 10Ks and beyond.

 Good Luck!!!!

I experienced it with the wrong type of shoe.  got new shoes and tried different type of motion control, caused gait to change and really caused pain.

for me, my knee has been hurting a little lately, after kinda doing too many miles too quick (again ), and for me i think it is runner's knee, or the knee cap not tracking properly. . i got a knee strap, which just goes around your knee ($14 @ kmart), and that has helped a lot.  also, ibprofen to cut down on swelling.

I made an appointment with the Dr. today. He does all of that work for pro teams in my area. I'm pumped!
