I am doing my second triathlon, but first time the swim is in the pool.  Apparently we are going to be swimming in the same lane both directions making it very tight.  If everyone around me was true to their time submittal, it should be pretty good.  My main concern is how far behind someone do you follow heading into the wall.  I can imagine them turning and pushing off the wall right into me.

I just did a tri the other week where an indoor pool was used, and each lane was shared w/2 people. We were told that we could 'decide amongst ourselves' how we will share the lane, ie. flip turn vs. open turn, circle swim vs. splitting the lane. The person I shared with and myself decided to just do open turns and split the lane. We had no problems or collisions. Of course, we were borh, coincidentally, two of the skinniest entrants there.

Splitting the lane isn't that bad.  I just did a race with a pool swim.  By chance, I ran into a guy I swam with in high school, and he was in my wave, so we shared a lane, both doing flip turns the whole time.  No problems.

If you are not sure whether you can come off the wall straight using flip turns, then just do open turns.  It won't make that much difference in your overall time in the race.
