Hey, folks! Remember that shark attack fatality in CA in the spring?  ESPN has this really cool feature article about the victim, his son, and one of the survivors who was there.  An awesome read! Totally worth your time...

Read the article...

Wow. Amazing courage. Not sure I could have gotten back in the water. I barely will swim in the ocean now and I didn't go through all that. Very impressive. I wonder if she's ever been on BT.

I caught that - great story.

It still creeps me out that my father-in-law's name is Dave Martin.

Thanks for the link. A shark phobia was definitely on my list of things to overcome when I began training. I read that story and was convinced I would never make it through an ocean swim. My first open-water swim was in the ocean just this past summer--and you better believe I was thinking about that story as I was bumping into jellyfish. It took everything I had to stay in the water. Some of the other first-timers didn't make it five minutes. I was so freaked out I was swimming in crazy directions--I don't know what shape I traced in the water, but it has about 112 angles!

It is comforting to know that the people involved have reached some level of peace. For the record: Months ago, when I read that the son went surfing in that water the next day, I thought he was crazy...and I still do!

It's nice to read that the folks involved have gained some sort of closure. The mind is so fragile, and the road back from a trauma of that magnitude is treacherous.
