Subject: New NASports Registration Policy

I haven't gotten the email yet, but I ran into this on their web page, posted today.  Interesting.

New Onsite Registration Procedures for North America Sports Races
Author: staff    October 10, 2008

Due to the tremendous growth of onsite registration, North America Sports will be implementing new onsite registration procedures. These new procedures will launch at Ford Ironman Florida and will be as follows:

•     Each athlete will fill out a form that will include their first & last name, birthdate, email address and phone number. This form will also include instructions on how the registration process will work. You will need to bring your photo ID and a credit card for payment, no checks or cash will be accepted.
•     Laptop computers will be used by our volunteers to take the prospective athlete’s contact and credit card information on-site. The volunteer will enter in the prospective athlete’s information directly into Active. They will then get the athlete’s credit card information and charge them the race entry fee.
•     The prospective athlete will receive a copy of the form they filled out as a receipt, which will outline when and how to complete the registration process. They will also receive a reminder via email.
•     After receiving the confirmation email the athlete will have a spot reserved for them in the event. However, the participant will still need to go back to Active.com during a specified timeframe to complete their online registration. Any athlete that does not follow this procedure will not be considered registered for the event.
•     The athlete will follow the same on-line procedure as before. They will access the Ford Ironman Florida event via a specific registration link, select their name from the athlete drop down bar and enter in their unique password. However, the online entry will not have a payment associated with it as they have already paid the entry fee.
•     The athlete will receive a set amount of time (1-2 weeks) to let them complete the registration.
This system will ensure fairness to all athletes wishing to sign up for NA Sports races. Under the previous system a number of certificates distributed at on-site registration were not redeemed and this created a situation requiring NA Sports to reopen on-line entries. People who attempted to enter on-line immediately after it opened and were closed out may not be aware of the additional spots available at a later date. This should no longer be the case going forward.

This new procedure allows the prospective athlete’s information to be put directly into the Active.com database so that it is accurate and has no chance of getting misplaced. It may take a little longer in the beginning so we ask that you be patient with our volunteers and staff.

That's a good call.  They don't mention if onsite registrations will be filled first and then go to online, but I'm assuming that part will still remain the same.

Gonna take longer signing up obviously, but it will eminate the "Maybe I will, so let's sign up for a voucher" crowd.

I like it .........

Agreed this is fair. I must have known 8 - 10 people at Moo that just grabbed a chit on The Saturday and had no intention of signing up.

Makes sense, except for a guy like Yams who is/was going for a Kona slot at MOO.  So, now he gets his Kona slot, but he had already got the certificate.  No way he is going to do MOO and then Kona a month later.

Other than that instance, it seems to pass the common sense test.

I like it.  I've long wondered why, if they make you pay for Kona right then, they didn't make you pay for other race registrations that day.

Makes sense to me, but my only complaint is having not done my first one (will do IMAZ next month), I'm going to have to decide before I even do my first one if I want to do my 2nd one. Yikes.

I am assuming that they will still offer the refund policy so if you do cancel you won't exactly be out the entire $525?

Is the regular registration after the Kona roll-down?  If so, then the  solution to this is just to wait and register the next day with everyone else.  If not, then yeah, something should be done about that.

Same thing goes for you - why not just wait until the day after your race to register?  Used to be that this was the only way current year athletes could register.

Open registration and Kona registration is between 9:00am and 11am on the day after the race. Kona rolldown takes place at 11:05. So if an athlete could possibly qualify at rolldown but doesn't, the athlete would then only have active.com or a community fund as a chance to get into that same race the following year.

Re: Kona.

People...you get to do KONA!  That is PRICELESS!  I personally would not be complaining about paying an extra entry fee if I ended up with a slot to Kona...

Okay, okay...so it would be NICE if they did the Kona rolldown first, before day-after registration.  But this "exception" affects SO few people.  Making people pay right then helps out TONS of people.

I just got the email and I think it's a good policy. A lot of people can't get in online due to the high number of tickets that may end up not being used. I'm assuming this largely came from the second registration opened for IM Canada.

Does anyone know if IMWI also did a second registration? I'm curious if all of the slots were really taken.

And if someone is in the hunt for a Kona slot, they will know it ahead of time.  It will not come as a surprise.  They can adjust their alternative registration plans accordingly.

And while "rolldown" happens at 11:05, the claiming of qualified spots happens earlier.  If you are on the bubble, and there are unclaimed spots still at 10:55.... or you know that all the qualified spots have been claimed in enough time to get in line for on-site registration.

looking in to doing FL in 2010... dose this mean that I should plan on volunteering and going down there? i know it would guarantee me a slot if i volunteered but will there be the same opportunity to sign up online? saving that travel money to get there i could buy some new toys for the race and training.

If it were me .............. and I wanted to enter Florida or Lake Placid .......... I would be there on site.  Otherwise you are taking a really big gamble to try and get a slot.

I'll be going up to LP to volunteer in '09 to get my '10 slot.  This year sold out on site, no online slots available.

Current year athlete reg. is usually the day before.  Is this still the case and will athletes have to pay for the next year's race prior to even doing the current one?

I've wondered the same thing. Not enough to contact NAS and find out, but curious about it. I would think they would eliminate this perk to current athletes if they want to see who's serious about racing the following year.

I've not taken advantage of it in the two races I've done since it was implemented, but there's a good chance I will next year at Canada if it's still possible. On the other hand, I never had a problem getting in line the morning after the race in the years before this policy. In fact I kind of enjoyed that time in line.
