Subject: How do I swap out my aerobars with bar end shifters?

So I am trying to swap out my PD T2+ S-bend bars and replace it with the PD Carbon Stryke aerobars.  After I remove the bar tape and disassembled the bar end shifter, I noticed that there is no way for the barrel end of the cable to be separated from the shifter without either cutting the cable or pulling the cable all the way from the derailleur. The cable and shifter have to be separated before I can remove the aerobars. Does this mean I have to pull the cable all the way from the derailleur?

lol, thanks...just trying to decide if I should go shop for a cutter/crimper and end caps or just take the bike to the LBS. This is both fun and frustrating at the same time!

Unless you have the tools at your disposal just run it into the LBS and they will have it swapped out in a matter of minutes. Won't cost too much.

Are your cables routed through the inside of your exisitng aerobars? If not, then why cut the cable? If they are, then it's time for the ole' bike vasectomy.

I think it's a pain in the a$$ to thread a used (squished/bent) cable back through all that housing and frame, so what I have done in the past is just clip the squished part off the rear cable and use it for the front, and use a new cable for the rear.

If you go this route, make sure that you get a good cable cutter-- the Park CN-10 is a lifetime investment kind of tool that I use all the time---super clean cuts on both cables AND housing.

Then, make sure you know how to adjust your derailleurs, because you'll need to do that too. Park also has some great how-to's in that realm...

Good luck! Bikes are not terribly complicated machines, and fixing/building them yourself is very satisfying. Just use the right tools for the job, be patient, and have fun!

Yeah, they are routed throug the inside.

Thanks for the tip. I'll pick that up!

I'm going to give this a shot and pull the cables. I noticed that for the front derailleur, the cable goes inside the down tube and comes out of seat tube. Is there a trick to thread the cable back in/out once I take it out? do I put anything in the holes where the cable goes in/out to prevent water from getting in once I'm done?

 Sorry with all the questions, but you guys have been great with the answers!

What I meant was that once you clip off the ends of the cables (that have been squished where they are clamped at the derailers) the cable for the front derailer will be too short to be used again.  However, the rear derailer cable is longer, so you can use it to replace the front derailer cable, and use a new cable for the rear derailer.

If you are just swapping some part of the set up that makes sense.  But don't forget that you sometimes will need to change the cables due to factors like aging of the cable resulting in things like a bit of rust, etc.  When I change cables, I change them all out, and earn back the investment of my cable cutters.
