I guess TJ Tollakson got inventive for his bike in Kona.  No need for a lunch pale when you have one on your bike.  Interesting to say the least.

They are murdering him over on the other board for it.  It seems like an interesting idea....for a questionable "fairing".  But it would need to direct the wind over your shoulders to be effective....I think.....The wayhe looks on it, its just moving the rush of air directly into his chest.

But.....I know about as much about aerodynamics as I know about use and english wheel.  I could be wrong

I say that the PayDay bar is an egregious violation.

I think it's a great idea......I read through the "other" forum and the creater of the device seems to be defending it. From what I've read so far I would say it's a great attempt at working all the rules to your advantage. It's little innovations like this that might bring better ideas and help further the development of the bike industry. I say nice job TJ......now let somebody else one up him on this one.

Andy,

It's not about weight. It's about aerodynamics.

The rule in question is 5.11 (e) and (i)

"(e) There must be no protective shield, fairing, or other device on any part of the bicycle (including frame, wheels, handlebars, chain wheel, and accessories) which has the effect of reducing resistance. Aerodynamic carriers for food, water, and or cycling provisions may be attached to or be an integral part of the aero-handlebars if they meet the following guidelines:
(i) the carrier can pass from front to rear, through a rectangular loop with dimensions of 10 inches (25 cm) in width and 8 inches (20 cm) in height.(ii) The front of the carrier is behind the cyclist’s hands when the hands are placed in their customary position on the end of the aerobars, and (iii) The length of the carrier is no greater than 10 inches (25 cm) front to rear.

When the carrier is an integral part of the aerobar, this integrated unit must be able to pass through the rectangular loop defined in (i) above and the carrier portion of the unit must meet criteria (ii) and (iii). In the event that compliance with this section is in doubt with respect to any particular carrier or integrated unit, a member of USA Triathlon may submit the carrier or integrated unit to USA Triathlon for evaluation." (bolded for ease of reading)

It's hard to say just by looking but I'm betting that the aero food carrier fits the specs noted above.

The complete two-piece fairing didn't comply, according to race officials, and he had to remove the bottom portion to race.

It's interesting to note that the 25cm x 20cm rule, followed exactly, would DQ most of the popular aerobar bottles such as Profile's; they are allowed because they can pass through the 25X20 cutout on an angle.
