Does anybody know how well road/ tri biking fitness translates to mountain biking? I was into mountain biking long before tris, but ever since our local bootleg trails have been clear cut or developed, the closest trails are an hour away. I am thinking of doing some X terra races next season, but it's not practical to get a lot of trail time in. It will be my third tri season, and my road biking is pretty solid. Any ideas?

It woud transfer really well in the fitness area!! You would have nothing to worry about, if you want to really improve it, find hills on the road bike and stay out of the saddle extra long. The mountain biking would be harder to handle, but unless your really weak, handling should always be possible, it just comes down to quick thinking. Yeah cycling comes down to heart rate and lactate threshold, so any cycling would improve both. .... if i was rich i would buy a good mountain bike to hit up the offroad trails, but i am too addicted to triathlon and all its hot bikes..... p2sl ultegra!! (im poor)

Aerobically, yes. But much like bike racing, MTB riding and Xterra have a large component of pace change. And there's the whole area of technical skills that road riding doesn't address. Since you've done the off-road thing before, you'll have some skills (though they may be a bit rusty). Expect a bit of an adaptation phase.
