Subject: When do you ride roadie, when do you ride TT?
For those of you with multiple bikes, when do you choose to ride your road bike instead of your TT bike when you aren't training for an event?

My season has ended yet I just can't seem to put the TT bike away for the roadie.

My road bike is decent but fairly entry level on the components. I've been looking at some of the road bike options out there but the thought occurred to me that maybe I wouldn't ride a road bike enough to justify the expenditure...

Thoughts?

Road Bike on roadie rides.. bad weather rides and sometimes when I got out for easy spins

Tri bike.. everything else. Though when I'm in my main training it's 90% tri bike.

Once upon a time I had the idea that you couldn't group ride in aero position but quickly learned that's not true. However everyone has to be strong in the aero position, I wouldn't want a newbie in the group.

Having said that, I know a few roadies who don't want to ride with a TT bike and I'm ok with that.

As for colder riding in the aero position, anyone have any slippage problems with your jacket or tech shirt on the pads?

I was on my road bike until about a month ago and I am training for a race in late Nov. As soon as the race is over, I'll go back to the road bike. It's a lot of fun to ride the road bike for months and then hop on your TT bike and see your speed go up!
I love my road bike, though. It's as nice as my tri bike but I like the component set on my road bike better (SRAM vs. Shimano).
If you can dedicate yourself to your road bike for the winter, maybe switching over some components from your TT bike would be a good idea.

eh a group ride of people on TT bikes is different than with roadies. You still can ride a TT, but the amount of time you'll be in aero is going to be very limited.

No problem with slippage on pads, even on cold rainy rides.

Group riding = road bike.  Solo riding = tt bike.

Unless I know the rider who is riding in aero in a group very well, I won't ride behind him.  It's simply too dangerous.

I have three bikes and vary which I ride.

If I ride with my women's race team road bike.

Winter I don't ride my tri bike outside.

When it is height of tri training I ride my tri bike.

When it is more play time, off season I tend to ride my other bikes.

I just got a cyclocross bike that I race cross on and in the winte will be my winter bike with fenders but swap out to normal tires instead of cross tires as road tires grip better.

Road bike most of the time.  Tri bike a week or two before races and on the trainer.

Old school roadie in me ........

That's a good point, while it's not too difficult to do (group rides in aero position), it does seem like I'm sitting up more than I'd like to simply to slow up when I get too close to the wheel in front of me. I was thinking more from a handling perspective that I can ride comfortably with others in aero....

Unless I get a new road bike or seriously upgrade some components, I still want to ride the TT because it's a much better bike...

Even for HIM distance? It seems like you'd want the serious miles in the aero position because like you've told me before, "train like you race because you race like you train."

Or something like that

Ture.  The main reason for that would be to acclimate to the position so you are not all stiff and nasty feeling coming off the bike.  For a longer race, it may take some more time to adapt.

BUT ...... as I said, it is on my trainer, so I do intermix some indoor rides on the tri bike in position with the outside rides on the roadie.

For FL last year I did almost all of my training on my tri bike because I knew I'd be aero for the entire ride.  This year I have done probably 80% or so of my rides on my road bike.  My bike splits have not suffered from that.

You did ask what we do as individuals.  Might not be what I suggest to an athelte I'd be coaching ......
