Extreme Veteran 481![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The Land of Mickey-Orlando | Subject: Did you wear a Garmin on your IM run?Ok...Im having issues. I admit, Im a techno junkie. I love the technical toys like power meters, bike computers and GPS units. However, I still run with the old GARMIN Forerunner 301. Why? Because Im OLD and I can READ THE NUMBERS This morning I went on my 12 mile run and had some SERIOUS issues with my Garmin. I live in a tree lined area of Orlando and for the first time EVER, my Garmin couldn't figure out what was going on. It just stopped at a certain mile and didn't pick up mileage for another 1.2 miles (after a year of training, I kinda know the distances by heart). The reason I really use this is that I am very close to the cut off times for each event and knowing pace might mean the difference between finishing under 17 or not....so...here is my question Im barely 3 weeks before Ironman Florida. Do I : 1. Get a new Garmin and try to get use to it 2. Go WITHOUT the Garmin and just go by time from one mile marker to the next 3. Keep using the current one and pray I don't have issues with it... I know..its crazy stuff..but your opinion is appreciated Edited by trihardathena 2008-10-16 9:21 AM |

I wore my Polar 625x for the rest of the race for splits. If you're used to training with the Garmin, I would wear it for the run. If you're worried about making 17 hrs and weather the Garmin will fail I would just pick up or borrow a cheap Timex and manually take splits. Just my $.02 Good luck in 16 days!!! |

Extreme Veteran 333![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Did you wear a Garmin on your IM run?Melissa- If you do decide to run with a new Garmin (like a new 301 or the 305), fyi, REI has a 20% off coupon online for members from now through the 20th, which can get you a 305 for right under $200. I have a 301 and now a 305 and I love the 305 and it's easy to use/comfortable to wear. I'm planning to use mine on the run b/c it's comforting to me to know like I always do where I am and how it's going.

Master 1728![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() portland, or | Subject: RE: Did you wear a Garmin on your IM run? While I use one in training, I don't use one during races. For me it's one less thing to deal with and the courses at IM's are well marked. However, if it's comforting for you to have one, and I can relate to the user friendliness of the large display on the Garmin 301/305, then do what puts your mind at ease. It's possible that your experience the other day was a fluke. Good luck at IMF! scott |

I actually used my Garmin for the bike and my boyfriends Garmin for the run. I wanted to know how long I had paused for, what my pace was, and how much time I had left. Without that data was scared of not making it in under 17 hours. I needed the assurance that I had something on me that would help me know if I would be finishing or not. That's just me. I was just really scared of not finishing in 17 hours... but I came in at 15:45. Get a Garmin 305. You can change the display so you can see the numbers. It's not hard to use at all. |

Let me just say, that trying to do manual splits in you head after a long day, is very hard! I could barely switch the time I was seeing on the Garmin from military time to the time zone I was in! And that was simple math. |

Regular 99![]() ![]() ![]() TwinCities, MN | Subject: RE: Did you wear a Garmin on your IM run?I used my Garmin 305 on the bike and the run at IMLOU. I had enough battery for both. It just depends on how long you will be out there. I figure about 11-12 hours would be max battery life. As for you Garmin 301. Check to see if the firmware/os is the latest. I am not sure if they are still writing code for that model it is fairly old. I always had problems with my 201 in downtown and tree lined areas. If you decide to get a device do it soon that way you are not troubleshooting it on race day. I really like the 305. I have the cadence and speed sensor and use it when the bike is on the trainer. |

Extreme Veteran 527![]() ![]() Round Rock, Texas | Subject: RE: Did you wear a Garmin on your IM run?I used a Timex Ironman watch and hit start at the beginning of the swim and then just watched the time as the race progressed. I knew I had 17 hours to finish. Doing the math in my head gave me something to think about besides the pain of finishing the race. Afterwards, I looked online for my splits. In the end, it only cost me $75 for the same the information. |

That would have been my recommendation. I'm SLOW. I'm OLD. The pace information has proved to be the key this year to getting me to "push" myself. |

Champion 5575![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Butler | Subject: RE: Did you wear a Garmin on your IM run?If you are worried about seeing the display on the 305 you have the option of using 1 to 4 field on 3 different screens so 3 - 12 different items. You could set up 1 item on each of the 3 screens and the numbers are very large. |

I didn't care about my splits. I just wanted to finish before midnight and wanted to time my run/walk intervals. |
