I am about to return my second pair of multi-lens sunglasses because of a broken frame (or in this case, nearly broken). I don't recall what the first ones were, but this pair is the Hyper Threat by Optic Nerve. The frames are cracking in this new pair where the old pair broke - essentially right above the middle of my eyes. This is due to switching lenses.

So does anyone have any suggestions for durable and not horribly ugly multi-lens sunglasses? I'd prefer not to spend a mint, but I also want a pair of glasses that will last a while too. Thanks.

I had same problem with higher-end frames and said enough and bought a $40 pair of RYDER Sunglasses that have treated me well for over 9 months with no problems. They come with clear, amber, dark lenses and take a second to change out. I wear them on bike and run and have yet to have an issue... No scratches etc that I though I might get with cheaper lens. They have different models, but this lik is similar to the one's I bought. My LBS carried them, but sure you can order on-line.

2 cents...

I have a pair of Tifosi sunglasses that I like - they make various models, in various colors. And they have interchangeable lenses. The frames aren't made of the kind of plastic that shatters easily when you drop them - I've dropped mine numerous times and they are fine. Plus, they're reasonable - well under $100 for a pair with 3 pairs of lenses (polarized). LBS sells them, as well as online. REI too.

I've had a pair of Smith sunglasses for a couple of years.  No problems, although I don't change the lenses all that frequently.  REI & Zappos both carry them, and you can sometimes get a good discount (I did) at sierratradingpost.com

Myself I like Native Eyewear.  I use them on the bike, run and everyday driving.  The best part is they work great on the water.  Durability...well there has been a few Foster induced stupid moves and the glasses are still holding up.

I got these glasses at Performance and am hoping to exchange them for a different pair, even if I need to pay a bit more for the new pair. I'll look for some of the ones you mentioned. Thanks.

Do any of you know how the lenses are removed from some of the glasses that have a frame around ~75% of the lens like the (Tifosi Ventoux)? Do you think those would be any sturdier?

Another option would be to look into sunglasses that have a "photochromatic" lens...the ones that adjust with the changing light conditions. That way you won't have to fiddle with changing lenses and risk breaking the frames. I wear a pair of Tifosi Slip Fototec glasses, and I've been very happy with them. You mentioned the Tifosi Ventoux - they come in a High-Speed Red Fototec lens, which is what I have on my pair...and I think it's a great lens.

ETA - FWIW...if you have trouble with lenses that fog, then I would highly suggest buying a pair that is vented. My first pair of glasses were not vented, and they fogged constantly. The Tifosi Slip is vented, so the fogging is greatly minimized.

Thanks for that thought. That's not really an option I considered all that much.
