Subject: Home remedy for pain?
DH has sprained his hand, from the fingertips to the wrist. X-rays do not show any fractures, but the swelling is unbelievable! He responds to all narcotics with severe vomiting. 800 mg of ibuprofen, alternating with acetaminophen, isn't even touching it. He is icing off and on.

Got any other ideas? TIA

Ouch!  Sounds really bad.  How about the alcoholic beverage of his choice!  A bottle of wine usually has me  feeling no pain whatsoever.  And, if the pain won't go away, at least he'll be happy, eh!

You may want to see your doctor and ask about synthetic narcotic pain medicines.  My first thought is: Tramadol (AKA Ultram). 

 

Years ago I broke and had both of my wrists fused with plates and screws (an ugly scene for sure).  For me, Tramadol was an effective alternative to traditional narcotics.

Thank you for the input. I'm going to call the pharmacist and ask about that. Got desperate and called the Doc this morning, wanted to send DH to hand therapy for compression. Huh-uh! He almost can't bear to put ice on his hand.

Narcotic-type drugs do the SAME thing to me...but I know they have other stuff available (not a doc, don't know the names)...but there should be some non-narcotic pain-killer they can give him cause I got some when I had my knee surgeries.

THere are about a dozen non-steroidal antiinflammatory medicines to choose from, not just ibuprofin. This class of medicines (NSAIDS) has several classes within it. If one isn't working, choose one frm another class. The pharmacist may know these details better than the doc, but only the doc can prescribe them.

In regards to Tramadol (Ultram)...while it is a fairly effective pain-killer for some, it should be noted that Tramadol is a synthetic opiate...which means that it CAN have the tendency to be addictive just like true opiates do. I've been taking Tramadol (for back pain) on and off since January, and while it does take the edge off for me...it also comes with some not-so-nice side effects, most notably constipation. Constipation is almost always present when taking opiates and/or opiate-like drugs. I've also experience some pretty bad withdrawal episodes when I have weaned myself off it. Everyone reacts to medications differently, though...so not everyone will have the same experiences. All I'm saying is...use it with caution, and educate yourself on any type of pain killers you might be thinking of using.
