I think the Colonial Area Tri club has regular swims out that way.  Google 'em, they have a website.

I usually do my OWS's at Huntington Park in Newport News on weekends. It has a roped off swim area and lifeguards 10 a.m.-6 p.m. I really like those parts of it because I usually do mine solo.

monica -- thanks, i had been planning on checking it out down there!

ollie -- CAT hasn't updated their website in like a year, has no phone numbers listed, and nobody answers their emails.  it is a club they just don't want new people to join.

saturday 9am grandview beach in hampton is the next swim among my tri-buddies.  i won't be there, but they don't care who shows up.  i think 5 or so people have confirmed they will be there unless the weather is poor.

as for cat, it is basically a poorly run club...however, every once in a while they do update ows swim times in the forum.  they have recently listed some this year.

what time?  i ride 50 miles from 7am to 930am.  i get home around 10am.  i am only a few miles from the college creek beach area.  i usually ows at the slice of beach one parking loop down from the college creek area because all the teenies are at cc causing trouble.

not sure about the temp.  i haven't ows in 3 weeks now.  i'll bring my wetsuit even if it ends up too warm.  i have jammers afterall.  so you want to go with 10:30am?  that'll give me time to grab my stuff.  i'll invite others that aren't on BT as well.

see you tomorrow morning...should be at least 4 of us if anyone else is interested.

directions for those interested:

From Jamestown:  take the colonial parkway towards yorktown for about 5.5 miles.  after a wooded area there is a clearing with a parking loop on the right hand side.  this is where we will meet.  for your reference there is a "duck blind" in the water about 100 yards in front of the parking loop.  if you pass this loop you can turn around at the next loop which is the "college creek" beach area, only about 200 yards down the road.  if you cross the college creek bridge you've gone too far.

From Route 199 from southern points:

Take a left at the Henry Street intersection on 199.  This will lead you to the colonial parkway.  Turn right on the parkway towards Jamestown (you actually have no choice because you may not turn left here).  I'm not sure of the mileage, but you will pass over 2 bridges I think.  One is kind of a lonely area, the second one is the college creek bridge (very short).  After the college creek bridge there will be a beach on your left and a parking loop on your right.  Pass this area and at the next parking loop on your left (about 200 yards...maybe a little further) park there.  The only landmark is in the water, a duck blind in front of the parking area.

I have no idea about water temps, I'd say warm enough to swim without a wetsuit, plus it will probably already have an air temperature of like 85-90 by that time.  I'll bring my wetsuit, but I definitely don't plan on wearing it.  BRING SUNBLOCK!!!!

awesome swim conditions today.  clouds at the right time so we didn't bake, comfortable water temperature, and just enough current to make it worthwhile.

I might be up for it.  I don't have a tri-related OWS under my belt yet and I'm planning on doing the sprint that weekend - sans wet suit maybe.  How about a Sat or Sun morning?

it will definitely be sans wetsuit because the water is like 80 something right now.  you'd bake in a wetsuit.  i could do sunday morning.  time does not matter since my inlaws will be in town and church is out.

Yeah... I'm thinking meeting up at Anniversary Park on Sunday 23rd for a swim and maybe a bike too.    Not sure what time the park opens but the Jamestown Settlement attraction opens at 9.  Anyone know?  Most parks open at sunrise but I don't know about this one.

Great.  How does 8am sound?  I'm thinking about trying to estimate the full swim for the sprint (about 825m) and if I feel like it afterwards doing the 12.4mile bike.  But I'm going to play the bike ride by ear.

I may do a OWS as well in the 29th in the am with a tri buddy of mine. Haven't set a time yet but would be at the anniversary park area because we are going to try and do a swim/bike brick.  I'll post here when we firm up the times.

Are we still thinking Saturday 8 AM?  I am bringing a non-BT beginner who is looking to get some tips before she tackles the Malibu Triathlon on Sept 13th.  I don't have any wetsuit experience so I'm  hoping some of you folks can help her out.

Looking back through the thread, it seems we got our wires crossed.  I'm thinking this Saturday, meh was thinking the 29th.  I'm up for either or both.  What about everyone else?
