I was at a Sprint Tri and was watching the guys come in from the bike and this one guy was proabably top 5 and he went over to his little cubbie area and pulled a 12oz can of Dr. Pepper out of his towel and shotgunned it!
I started laughing and off he went.  Guess what?  He finished 2nd.

Anyone else ever shotgunned a DP during the race?  I guess he gets a rush of energy from all the sugar and high fructose corn syrup.  Not to mention the caffeine.

Thought is was interesting considering it was a triathlon and he is chugging Dp.

Drank Flat coke the entire the Ironman Marathon. Once you start on the coke, you really need to stick with it. Going down from the rush isn't nearly has fun as getting a rush.

In a Sprint?  I barely even take a sip of water during the whole event.  I'm certainly not going to waste time drinking a carbonated beverage no matter how much I love DP!

During a HIM or IM?  Sure, I've drank plenty of soda at the water stops.

LOLZ @ ultrahip.

If you feel like you need a doctor at the transition in a sprint, you might be going too hard.

DP at the half-way point on my long ride is like jet-fuel. I plan on drinking cokes during the final 50 miles of Death Ride this weekend (even trained with it to make sure it didn't hurt my stomach). I have heard from many experienced endurance cyclists that coke can be magic for a bonking rider. With that said, there was an article in Bicycling that said it doesn't help you at all. So who do you believe, people or magazines?

Simple sugars and caffeine.

Two very well proven performance enhancing supplements.  Not sure why that rag would say it doesn't help.

Back in my mtn bike days  I would have a bottle of flat coke the last hour of the long (2.5 hour +)XC races.  It definitely helped me IMO.  I don't know if a sprint distance tri is long enough though to use this method of turbo boost.

I can only imagine the flatus resulting from such a thing.  I suppose it could help with your cadence, but those behind you probably wouldn't appreciate it.

Yeah, almost seems like it was a bet or something.  I can't imagine he actually believed it was going to help his run.

Isn't caffiene a diuretic?  I gave up on red bull and x2 caffiene Powerbar Gu packets before a workout because I thought it might be giving me cramps... in my claves that is.

Only in very large doses.  Plus, you start to build up a tolerance to it.  I drink caffeine every day, so having Gu with caffeine isn't any different.

Yes, caffiene is a diuretic.  It has it pluses witht he extra burst of energy, but can lead to cramping as one of the minor side effects and having to evacuate your bowels as a major side effect.  But used correctly and while staying properly hydrated can give you the extra boost you need.

Without having it in front of me, it had to do with the bodies inability to absorb the sugars efficiently...contrary to my experience, it stated it would cause stomach problems.

I can see drinking flat coke, that seems like it would go down well and would sure give a boost.  The thought of shotgunning a fizzy Dr. Pepper though makes my stomach hurt even without the idea of running immediately after.  I would puke for sure!

That does make some sense.  I can bet the osmolality of a soft drink is pretty out of whack compared to a typical sports drink.

But I still don't give Bicycling mag. hardly any clout.  It is just one big uber-biased ad campaign calling itself a magazine.

I read something about it a while ago and can't remember if it was a study or just random musing, but it discussed the role of phosphoric acid in aiding digestion.

I love me a can of Coke if I am having a long rough day on the bike.  I can't think of anything that has a bigger impact on the way I feel than the lift it gives.  Giggidy!
