Subject: You be the judge
So, I was doing a long ride on Saturday and was cruising down a stretch of highway that was 4 lanes across(2 each way). I was riding on the far right and traffic was next to non-existent. As i was riding i could hear a car following along behind me for a bit, which was somewhat frustrating since there was no reason for them not to pass. After  minute or two i hear them start to pass... now here is where it gets interesting, just as they pass me the passenger door opens and the passenger falls out of the SUV and eats it HARD directly in front of my bike.

In a state of shock, i avoided hitting him and then stopped and help get the mid 30 year old man out of the street while his wife sits in the car in the middle of the street with the door still wide open. The guy is covered in road rash. I ask what happened, but didn't get any response. So i asked the wife directly if they had been drinking (couldn't smell anything), or where having an argument. They both responded no. Right after that, the wife just takes off leaving her husband on the side of the road without a word.

So there i am on the side of the road with some random guy who just fell out of a moving SUV and then got abandoned by his wife. I asked if he was alright, he stated that he was fine and just started walking off and started using his phone to call people. I advised him to seek medical attention which he shrugged off and started walking to a nearby convenience store.

Afterwords i started thinking about them following me on a quiet 4 lane road and the timing of when he fell out and it got me thinking if perhaps he was trying to screw with me...like hitting me with his door... and just messed it up. I mean people don't just fall out of moving cars! So in the end I don't know whether to feel sorry for him, or think he just got what he deserved. I guess i never know what really happened

Bizarre. I'd say you are right that he was planning on doing something directed at you and it backfired on him. Sounds like when you were concerned about him, he/they were speechless.

Just curious -- how do you know they were husband and wife?

Anyway, I'd say that the hypothesis of intended harm is a live option -- but anybody stupid enough to try that is also stupid enough to fall out of the car for lots of other reasons as well.

I seriously doubt she booted him out.  I think it would be really hard to manage that while driving.

why doesn't this kind of stuff ever happen to me?!

People just don't fall out of moving cars like that.  Maybe it was performance art?

Um...that is one weird situation.  I certainly wouldn't have believed it was happening.  How bad was his road rash?

They probably were husband and wife.  The husband just reinforced to his wife that yes she is married to an idiot.
