I love mine so far.  So much nicer/faster than my old 301.

I love how much you can customize the data screens.

Uploading the workouts to your computer is crazy easy.

The battery seems to last forever...haven't tested it out to exhaustion yet, but did a whole week's worth of workouts without charging it.

I don't like that you can only view workouts online...I wish there was something like their old Training Center where I could view the workouts on my computer without going online.  And I'd love to figure out how to get it to stop opening the (now useless) Training Center when I plug in the schtick.

And I'm having a bit of trouble navigating around the screens...I'm just too used to my old 301 and a lot of stuff is in new places.  But that will come with time.

Oh, and I actually liked the velcro strap on my 301 better I think...the plastic strap doesn't adjust as nicely as the velcro did.

But overall I really like it...works GREAT!

What does everyone else think?

Well, I didn't realize that it didn't measuer distance in the water until after I bought it. I have a 305 that works great for me and bought the 310 because I thought I could measure my OWS's. First time out my estimated quarter mile waypoint showed .62 miles. I measured it three more times all around .58 -.62 miles. Was a little disappointed. The battery life is great but never really had a problem with the 305.

I really like mine as well.

You can still download your data to Training Center on your computer... just toggle the mygarmin and desktop option.

I'm looking forward to getting a bike kit quick release kit.

I have a few HRM's already so I don't find it to be a big deal.  I like the fact that GPS is built into the watch (unlike Polar and Suunto) and that the GPS signal acquisition is very fast.  I don't like the fact that GPS and heartrate do not work while swimming.

Hunh?  Garmin's site specifically says the 310XT isn't compatible with Training Center.  Did I miss something?

I was talking with a friend of mine who just bought it and he said he was very disappointed.  He said it does not measure the distance in the water, it does not show your cumulative time when running, and the wireless connectivity is always a PIA.

He even called Garmin and asked about the cumultative time while running and they said NO it doesn't have that function.  And they also said they never claimed it measures your distance in the water.  Well then, what is the point of a waterproof GPS device if it doesn't measure distance in the water!!  I'd rather spend 20 bucks on a stop watch then.

I love my Garmin 205 and 305 but the 310XT sounds like a huge swing and a miss.

Well, when mine plugs in it OPENS Training Center...but then when I tell it to get the data it does nothing but tell me I have no device connected.

What am I missing??????

Oops, meant to edit my last post but hit the wrong button.

DreamChaser...what do you mean it doesn't show cumulative time running?  I can show "elapsed" time...is that what he's looking for?  I'm confused...what is cumulative time running?

I love mine! I have posted a few times of my thoughts. I am glad I purchased it.

In one of there adds it shows a guy running out of the water & the path that he swam outlined behind him, so I assumed that it would show your distance in the OW swim. i felt like was misled & I would have gotten a different model or a second hand one

I just got a bit excited and thought about plunging into spending $400 for this thing but found this picture uploaded by someone on Amazon:

swim

They said it was a 1.1 mile triathlon swim and the 310 measured over 3 miles. I think it is safe to say there is no one that swims this erratically during a tri.

What do BTers recommend? I think I'm going to wait for the technology to develop. While its great that Garmin is pushing the envelope (and perhaps released its product too soon) here and promoting the competition among competitors, its never safe to purchase the first line of a model in anything (vehicles included).

Just got it and am lovin' it so far.  Long ago, I quit tracking things in the GTC since the Garmin Connect site gives me everything I want for now.  If they ever improve GTC, I'll give it another go.

I am baffled by all these folks who are disappointed that the GPS doesn't work in the water.  Garmin never promised or otherwise said that it would. And it's not an issue with Garmin - that's just how the GPS system typically works at water surface (or rather, doesn't work).  If you get good tracks on your swim, be happy.  But chances are that you won't.  That's not something Garmin can do much about.

Cheers, Chris

Use the free program from ZoneFive Software called SportTracks for your Garmin uploads.  I've used it for as long as I've had my 305 and love it.  Looks like it is compatible with the 310.

I guess since I own a few HRM's I not too excited about it.  I really don't like the band.  And it seems heavier than the 305.

you are going to be waiting a long time. Garmin didn't change the laws of physics, nor the nature of the universe for this release, and I'm betting they won't for the next one. GPS doesn't work underwater because the radio frequencies they use don't penetrate. If garmin could make such a thing, I suspect it would be promptly classified and restricted to military use.

seriously, why do you think no one yet made a waterproof GPS? Making a watch waterproof to a couple meters is trivial...

Junk for swim distance. However it works fine in the water for timing and has much better functionality over the 305 for racing, as it will automatically switch sports and do transition times. This is from people I know who have it. I do not have it. Still content with my 305 when it works.

Here are a few of my comments as a long time Garmin owner (201 & 305 since '05). Note I don't have the 310, but I'm pretty sure it does all the 305 can do as well as the 305 can do it.
  • The 310 is not a first release. It's an incremental improvement over the x01 and x05 models they've been making for 5+ years
  • Every new Forerunner was only marginally better (seriously, the 301 can do about all that the 305 can) than the one it replaced, but at the same time IMHO, each have been significant improvements. The 305 has much better HRM & GPS receiver than the 301, the 310 has much better battery life, PM head unit, real water-proofness, wireless transfer, and a 3'rd party scientific calorie formula
  • The Forerunner works fine for swim distance IF you put it under your swim cap. Really this isn't a PITA at all. If you're worried about losing it, tether it
I think it's the price over the previous models that gets the griping going. It seems as though everybody either doesn't know or forgot the 305 came in at $350 when it was new. There were plenty of these same "The 305 is not a $150 improvement over the 301" discussions, but I bet the only ones buying a 301 these days are uninformed buyers.

I'll end this post with the pic of my 800m swim at my last tri (305 in a zip-lock under my cap):

I just got mine and I love it.  It came with software version 2.5, but I upgraded it to 2.6 after much hassle.  For some reason with version 2.5, it wouldnt send anything to the unit, only download from it.  It boiled down to 4 hours of searching and finally figuring out the problem was due to Internet Explorer's security settings.  (If you're having this problem, turn off ALL your IE security settings and try again)

My only gripes are that it's a bit difficult to save a location.  I wish there was a way that you could just hit or hold a button or two and instantly mark a spot.  As it is now, I have to stop and scroll through menus to save a waypoint.  My second gripe is the ANT Stick.  It would be way easier to upload directly from USB, but I guess they couldnt find a way to make it waterproof with a USB port.  I'll live with it, but I dont want to have to shell out $50 bucks for a new stick if I end up losing it.

As for people who complain about GPS not working while swimming - It's not a function of the Garmin unit, it's a function of the GPS wavelength which cant really penetrate water.  I know this from years of being on a submarine that you cant use GPS when you're submerged.  Unless you stick an antenna on your head while you swim, it's just not going to work.  Sorry, that's life.
