update:

i survived.

the whole swimming through kelp forests SUCKED!. At about 500m i'm cruisin along in my ill-formed freestyle stroke and something brushes my face...i wig out for a sec and think nothing of it.

i continue on...happens again! so i'm all, ok wth is that! animal? fish? harris sea monster? so alll my concentration was off my stroke and i continue on and on my next stroke, my left arm is engulfed in slimey sinuey seaweed stuff...it wrapped around my neck, my hands and arms...so i swim harder freakin out. mind you, i suck at swimming. i begin to breast stroke, parting the weeds in front of me as i stroke through..but this drops my feet and my legs were all tangled and creating resistance, thoughts of a greater hell populate in my mind. Guy in a kayak cruises up and is all "good job man, keep it up"..keep it up?! dood i'm clothed in a mop of soggy weeds!!!!

so i flip on the back and yes...i backstroke and the seaweed stuff just skims off my backside! what an experience!!!

all in all i'm proud of myself for finishing...i was thinkin of dipping out at one point but decided to chug through. While i set no records today, it was definately an accomplishment.

Good to see a few BTers out there and it was nice to meet some new faces.

congrats to all that participated!

It was nice seeing Scottie and Jennifer before the race. Scottie - ya, that seaweed stuff was freaky. I kept thinking it was a temporary situation - wrong! Eventually, I convinced myself that it was clean seaweed, so it didn't bug me so much any more.

Did you guys have a nice ride? Sorry I didnt' stick around after to chat or ride with you guys. I was doing a race simulation - so did a real quick transition to the bike, so I could test out a headache issue I've been having on the bike after a hard swim.

Great job Scottie, Carol, and Jennifer!  Also, Daryn kicked butt, he had a solid swim time.  I wished I could have joined but my owner made me go to a much needed church session.  Seaweed, huh, man that would have played with my mind the whole swim!

Nice to meet you Scottie.  I hear you about the seaweed.  I wanted to pop my head up and yell WTH!  All I could think about were snakes coming out of the grass.  My husband is such a dork,  he said he was wondering if there were bass in the grass and wants to come back and go fishing.

I thought it was funny how many people continued on with their training after the race. The parking lot looked like a transition station.

Ya'll are tougher than I am.

Issue #1.  Would not allow me to wear my wetsuit
Issue #2.  People warming up were exiting covered in seaweed
Issue #3.  During Marty's pre-swim demonstration his white tri top turned brown instantly

Result: I'm NOT going in that lake.  I'm not prissy about too many things but this is one thing I am pretty fussy about.

Good job to the rest of you.

Most of the races I do are like that regarding muddy tri suit. In fact, I won't ever buy a tri suit with white on it again! Lake Jordan is especially muddy this year. My face feels like I have a mud mask on until I get home and shower. Lol! The seaweed was not so bad once I accepted it. Next time, give it a try!!!! you can do it!!!

PS: I'm glad I didn't think about snakes!!!

PSS: whenever I am in a lake where I can see stuff, I try to look slightly forward in the water, rather than directly down. That kind of helps with the freakishness. I picked up that strategy at Lake Logan... you can see lots of creepy stuff in the water!

I think I have become immune to dirty water, stinky water and the possibility of snakes...does that make me weird!? It's funny, I was rinsing my suit after the race and people were commenting about the brown coming out of it, whatever...I do this every Wednesday night as part of my lake decontamination!

FYI- for those that feel congested after OWS, I cannot recommend the Neti Pot enough, its flushes out your sinuses and I haven't had a problem with congestion since I started using it after each swim.

I have heard good things about the Neti Pot but the thought of putting liquid up one nostril and watching it come out of the other one is sort of gross.
Hey  we swam in Harris lake, the Neti Pot is sounding quite nice suddenly.

I've been using the sinus flush idea too. I don't have a neti pot yet - just using a dixie cup for now. They are only like $15 at target, so I may pick one up. I really like the idea of getting that yucky lake water out of my sinuses. It also helps after pool swims. I just get stuffed up so easily.

lol @ the backstroke, I should have done that too. It definitely was a huge accomplishment for me as well. Great job man.

It was great meeting you and Jennifer, thanks for letting me ride with you.

Do you think you can send me that cue sheet for the ride we did that day?

Glad I'm not the only one who thought it was windy yesterday.  I fought the wind my entire ride.  Mental toughness day.

Didn't ride yesterday but rode on Tuesday (similar wind). Riding IN to work (almost due North) I had it in my face and had the "why are you SOOO slow"? talk with myself. Then coming home I realized why! It was an awesome wind to have at your back...not so nice as a headwind though!

I live in Winston-Salem, but need to practice OWS for Pinehurst.  When do you meet?  Is Lake Jordan really nasty?
Thanks!

Click on this link ( http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/jlows/)  and it will take you to the JLOWS group. People post on there when they are going to swim. Generally people are swimming on Wednesday night at around 5:30pm/6pm.
If you post a time when you plan/want to swim people often say cool I will meet you.
I don't think Jordan is nasty, not any different from what you will swim in at other events around here.

Good Luck and maybe get to see/meet you at Jordan or  Pinehurst.
