569![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: Days getting shorterAll summer I had the benefit of sunlight during my morning workouts. I usally run/bike from 6-7 am. During the past fwe months it was great. I could see where I was going.. Today dawn was at 6:15 AM. I started my bike ride in the dark. I really dont like to bike/ run in the dark. Traffic is bad enought in the daylight. I do have lights but I am very concerned about traffic... How do you guys train in the off season? In the dark?? I guess I have to spend time on the treadmill and spin bike this winter.. There is just something about running in the dark of the morning that does not seam "right".. |

Payson, AZ | Subject: RE: Days getting shorterTrainer for the bike if I have to, although my bike does tend to get put away for a few months. I almost always run in the morning and that means in the dark most times. It doesn't bother me. I do plan my runs to be around streets with lights though. And the bonus of early morning runs means a lot less traffic, especially out where I live. |

Just a few days ago my regular route had a street light out and that was a bit different...kinda felt like a ninja running through the darkness, ready to bring pain to my knees, ankles or any other joint that was asking for it. On the plus side it is very peaceful though. |

As for the bike, its on the trainer in the week and maybe a mid afternoon ride on the weekends. |

Elite 3770![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Days getting shortera no-no for women. it needs to be said. If I run at night, it is in a city where people are walking around and lots of light...I know of lots of women that do run solo in the dark, and I just shudder at the thought!
biking in the dark is really scary. i know people that do it with pretty expensive lighting systems for their bikes. I personally don't like not being able to see all the features of a road. |

Veteran 257![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() St. Paul, MN | Subject: RE: Days getting shorterIf I can't get my biking in during the daylight hours, I will put it on the trainer or head to a spinning class at the gym. Once the snow flies, I typically do not get on my bike outside at all. While neither option is ideal, it's better than no time in the saddle. |

Extreme Veteran 575![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Concord, NH | Subject: RE: Days getting shorterDo you have trails near you and a mountain bike? I love night riding, whether it be on my cross bike, road bike, or mtn bike. A 10W light is sufficeint for most conditions on the road. You will want more if you ride offroad. Running in the dark is not that bad either, I get my runs in at lunch time 99% of the time though. I avoid the drainer and dreadmill at all costs. |

Expert 1118![]() ![]() , North Carolina | Subject: RE: Days getting shorterI always run in the dark under the stars with nothing but the sound of crickets. It is SO peaceful. I hit the road at 4:15 am to walk my dog, then hit the road running by 4:45 am. It was un-nerving at first, but now that I'm used to it, I wouldn't have it any other way. I always wear Road ID, carry cell phone, and pepperguard. But I do have a dreadmill, I mean treadmill, as back up. As for biking in the dark; I don't think so. I may get a trainer for the winter. |

Champion 10021![]() ![]() , Minnesota | Subject: RE: Days getting shorterI run in the dark a lot, and in fact often enjoy it. I wear a really good headlamp (bright, not expensive), a lot of reflective gear, and even have a new running vest that I am excited about. I keep my music low or off, so I can pay attention better to surroundings since I can't see as much. I am not a big fan of riding in the dark. Except in a few cases where I really know the route, it freaks me out. I hope to ride more this winter, but will save that for weekend days when it's light out. I will admit I don't ride a lot in the winter... |

I've been mostly doing OW sessions with a group the last three weeks and just got back to my 6am weekday training at the local outdoor pool last week...now it's dark when I get there. I mostly train after work (around 6pm), but that doesn't allow me much more time for a daylight ride than riding in the morning would. Pretty soon it'll be trainer time and long rides on the weekends. I'll run in the dark, though. |

I'm buying a mi Newt for doing MTB night rides (it's 200 lumens), so I plan to use it also for my morning rides. BTW, it doesn't get light here until 6:35!.. f'n A.. it won't be long that it doesn't get light until past 7. |

Regular 82![]() ![]() ![]() New Jersey | Subject: RE: Days getting shorterI get up early to work out. I live in a suburban area so the roads are pretty well lit with street lamps and there are few cars out early in the morning. I walk/run in the dark. I usually carry a flashlight with me, although I have a new headlamp that I'm going to try out. I don't keep it on all the time; I just use it if I'm in a particularly dark area and need to see for my footing, or if there is a car approaching (and then I usually move onto the sidewalk). I also take my big dog along as my workout buddy and protector. I haven't started biking yet but plan to later this month. My plan is either to ride on my trainer, or to ride in the dark - I'm getting lights and reflective tape and such to make me as visible as possible, but riding early there aren't too many cars out and I plan to stick to side streets that should have little to no traffic. 175![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Days getting shorterIn the spring I used to ride my bike to the rec center, swim, and then have to ride my bike home in the dark. I bought a Light and Motion Vega light and it worked pretty well (I think about $150-$200?) . Also wore a really bright jacket. I'll ride in the dark until they put gravel down on the roads, then I'm stuck on my trainer. Blech. Thinking about taking spinning classes this winter. But otherwise, my plan is to just get fat and lazy in the winter so I'll have motivation to work out come spring. Probably a bad plan... |

My night vision sucks as it is...and that's WITH wearing contacts! I won't take the risk riding into an unseen pothole or curb. I'm actually not too fond of running/walking in the dark either...so the gym it is. |

Pro 4578![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Vancouver, BC | Subject: RE: Days getting shorterI ride on the weekends during the daytime hours, and usually twice a week during the evenings at our local velodrome which is indoors and lit. Other times during the week when it is dark, I either ride on the trainer or rollers (I didn't do that at all last year) or I head out with some lights to some non-busy roads (we have a 10km loop through a park). For the past month, I have been carrying lights in my pockets when heading out in the evening, just in case I get caught in the dark. Swimming, I swim indoors, so it's lit. Our outdoor pools close earlier and earlier at the end of the season. Running, well I don't really run, but when I do, I have no problems doing that in the dark either. I live in a city with lots of people though, so I'm never really in a seculded area. |

Veteran 129![]() ![]() State College, PA | Subject: RE: Days getting shorterI love to run in the dark, if the moon is bright. I live near some well-manicured fields that allow me to run a good five miles without ever touching a road. I feel very lucky about that. However, when the moon is not bright, it's not real safe, even if it's relatively flat - it's still a field. I have tried different headlamps without much success. I would love to know what people have been using successfully. Any advice for a the best headlamp to buy? Thanks! |

Veteran 190![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Delaware, OH | Subject: RE: Days getting shorterThis will be my first winter training, and I will see how it goes. Don't own a treadmill but do have a trainer. Don't have enough spare cash for gym membership. I run in the dark all the time, even in the summer because by the time I get the kids in bed it is usually dark. Had to stop running on the sidewalk after a uneven pavement section caused me to trip so now I run in the street. I live in a small subdivision in a rural area so it is safe (or I feel that way anyway) my biggest danger is the dogs that run after me. Biking in the dark, well that is something I am not comfortable with because of me, not the cars. Like to see where I am going. |

I use a Petzl 4led head lamp and run in the neighborhood on sidewalks. little to no traffic at 10:30pm too. Best way to avoid the Dallas heat in the summer and the ONLY way to work it all in to a day with 4 children during the school year. now cycling...never at night...that just freaks me out! Luckily my work schedule allows for 3 daylight rides a week. Rarely too cold around here for a ride!! |
