I want each of you to go to your cabinet right now, take a can of soup out, look at the sodium content come back here and say WOW, I didn't know I was putting that in my body !

Normal sodium intake according to the Mayo clinic is between 1500~2400 milligrams (mg).  So a good number to remember is 2000 right?  Take a can of soup for instance, the one I'm looking at is 550mg BUT the kicker to remember is the SERVINGS per can.  In this instance, it say's 2.  So since I'm a fairly big guy, I can eat this entire "Healthy version" of soup for lunch.  That is 1100mg of sodium I have put in my body just for this one can of soup at lunchtime.  That to me is over half of the reqirement.  God forbid looking at a small package of premade meatballs!  (5000mg for the small bag!)

Please, watch sodium on processed foods (canned, packaged meats, frozen entries), stick with fresh or frozen veggies.  Blood pressure and diabetes is rampant in America.  Do this for your family also.

That's funny, I cant get enough! I bet three shakes from my salt shaker probably gives me my sodium requirement for the week, I love sodium, sodium chloride, etc, cant get enough! I take in almost 300mg per hour when training, Im sure its higher when I am racing as I will pop some s-caps also.

Something to consider is that many endurance athletes (esp salty sweaters) in hard training need more sodium than the average person (link).

I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum.  My diet was changed recently, and a side effect of this is I am now fairly low in sodium (averaging 1200-1400mg per day) and other electrolytes.  This is an issue, as I'm currently battling cramps related to this on an almost daily basis.

Here's an article from a well-known sports nutritionist, Monique Ryan.  Take note of the sodium losses per hour on average for IM Hawaii participants (1.5 grams or 1500 mg per hour) and salty sweaters (2.4 grams per hour over 3 hours of moderate intensity cycling - or 7200 mg in total).

Granted, these numbers are for those training/racing in the heat, but even an average salt sweater would most likely have issues trying to keep their overall sodium intake low.

Me either- soup is ridiculously easy to make, so I just never think to buy the canned stuff. Just had some amazing butternut squash curried soup last night and it was awesome. Super healthy too!

I make homemade soup at my cafe everyday and could not imagine buying canned for my place or at home.  It is t easiest thing to make!  Just make big batches of veggie broth and chicken broth and freeze it in contianers..thaw when making your own soup.

Not to be a jerk or anything but what did you expect from a prepackaged, processed, shelf stable product that is conveniently available.  This is what the "typical" American eats and what the food companies thrive on.  If it weren't easy to say "new healthier recipe" these companies would not be around today.

Im not saying im perfect in my eating habits but i know the canned soups and veggies in my cupbords are terrible but hey im unemployed and my brother hates living at home so mom and dad said here is an appt that you can live in and he said ok.  did i mention that neither one of us are working right now.
