.....yup i am a a-hole..........but i have seen this guy hot rodding around town on his bad a## bike but no helmet many times......he makes me nervous with his riding "skills"...

today we crossed paths while was on a run and he was rolling down the same trail at the park. i could not help but bring up the topic................"you should get a helmet bro!!!"......i say..........

he says "i got one" "its at home"

i say, "it works better when it is on your head".......i told him as i ran and he rolled along side me that i had been in a few serious wrecks on my bike, one of which i would not have lived through had i not been wearing my helmet"

"ah dude, i have been many wrecks as well" he says...........and "i am riding in the state championship this weekend"..............

i think........yeah right on the state championship.......there's no way........

anyway.......

he rolls on and off in the distance

i run on.........thinking........that went over like a lead baloon and now i look like a real a-hole.....

there you have it......kill me......

i cant think of a reason to ever be out riding without a helmet.......even if you are just cruising on a cruiser......

It's probably ok to voice genuine concern over someone's reckless behavior but people ride motorcyles w/o helmets (in the states where that is still legal) and many people simply refuse to where their seat belt...not to mention the walking heart attacks you see everywhere stuffing their face.

Maybe if he hears that comment a couple of times from people he will realize people think he is an idiot not "too cool to wear a helmet" and will wear one....but I doubt it.

Yes because ultimately it does all come back on our wallets in some form or fashion.  I wonder if he has health insurance or will I have to pay higher taxes, health insurance, etc because of strangers like him.

I commend you for interviening. Although I probably wouldn't have. I crashed 2 days ago and my helment saved me no doubt, my head hit the ground so hard it broke the helment. I was a bit dazed from the blow, but I walked away.

I think the problem is that many bad cyclists give good cyclists a bad name and incense drivers to take out their aggression on good cyclists. I am including non-helmet wearers in the bad cyclist category. As well as the ipod wearing, riding down the wrong side of the street, riding on the sidewalks crew. I saw a girl riding on a very busy intersection, riding the wrong way down the street, listening to an ipod, without a helmet on. If I was driving in my car, it would be hard for me to avoid hitting her without being quite pissed. Feels like a lot of us goody goodies have been getting hit recently. It is a scary trend. Stay safe!

I was waiting for someone to respond to my post with "what you said"

After I posted it I realized it could be taken as if I was pointing the finger back at The Bear but I actually kind of agree with him. The rider in question obviously knows that bike helmets exist, presumably knows they increase safety, and he chooses not to wear one...ok with me. I happen to wear one when I ride but I'm fine with those who don't.

That's a huge assumption. You have any data to back that up? How many helmetless cyclists in a given year end up on the public dole?

I think it matters, because head injuries don't only affect the injured.  Caregivers and loved ones of all sorts have to deal with the aftermath.  How about children left high and dry?  And if none of that is my business, it certainly IS my business, when the bill comes due.  We all pay a higher price (insurance premiums, for example) when care is administered unnecessarily.  And, care for preventable head injuries is, by my definition at least, unnecessary.

That said, my inclination is still to mind "my own business," and not say anything.  Otherwise, it's like trying to teach the proverbial pig to sing.

ah, the "do you have the data to back it up" argument...you know the answer to that, so why ask?

guy without a helmet is an idiot and ppl should tell him, but i guess it's no good. you can tell smokers of the consequences of smoking and they don't listen until they're in hospice dying of emphysema or lung cancer...

I often want to tell people to wear a helmet - because I am a human being that cares about other human beings.  It's sad when society simply gives up, probably because they've run into so many negative people getting on their case when they try to help.

I commend you for trying, Craig.  I've wanted to say that a lot of times this summer, but I am too chicken.

Not long ago I saw a car weaving.  As I got closer I saw a teenager texting while he was driving.  I pulled up beside him at the next redlight.  He had his passenger window down so I hollered over to him "You're a road hazard!  Hang up the damn phone!!".  He flipped me off and drove off.  Unsolicited advice?  You bet.  But he was a hazard to others not just himself.  I doubt I'd say anything to a helmetless biker...but I might.  It ain't easy being me.

Bit of a difference there between a driver endangering others and a helmetless cycllist posing no danger to anyone but himself.

I fully support an adult's right to splatter his brains on the pavement if he so chooses. I assume they are aware of the risk and neither need or appreciate me pointing it out to them.

Its a person's choice (unless there is a specific rule/law dictating it - in the state of MD if you are under 16 it is the law or if you are on a motorcycle).

I rode years without one.  Even when I rode with my team.  In races I had to wear them so I did.

Now I wear one because I've got kids and I give them a bunch of sh-t for even putzing around in the driveway without one so I can't look like a hypocrite and not wear one.

Plus as a USAC coach I am obligated to tell anyone I work with to ride with one as it is a USAC requirement in their events and I'm not really supposed to work with someone that refuses to use a helmet.

Oh I agree with you 100%.  I'm just saying sometimes it's hard to my mouth shut.  There is a runner that runs early in the mornings on my route to work and he is barely visible.   There is no shoulder so he runs on the road...he runs shirtless and is dark/tanned.  I'm debating stopping and telling him to find a road that is not so busy or just running him over.

There is this dad that rides with his son to my kids school basically escorts him there and back which I think is pretty cool. His son wears a helmet and he doesn't. It has always bothered me as kids learn by example better than being told.

I never met the man but bumped into him at a school event. I said something like I see you ride with your son to school that is great. Why don't you wear a helmet like your son? His answer was where I grew up we didn't wear them. My response was where I grew up we didn't have them either but I always ride with my helmet as I want me to see me doing what I expect them to do.

I went 24 mph head first into a metal street sign pole June 2007,  I'm quite sure my helmet save me from serious injuries. I have a hard time watching folks be idiots and not wear one.
