I noticed some of the beaches in Monona were closed due to blooms.  Having gotten a rash from that once, I'd ideally live to never experience it again.   I've also got another friend at work who has been out of the office with intestinal problems since the OWS race 2 weeks ago.  I've been sick (head/chest) but he's in much worse shape.  I'm guessing this is the one time having nearly double his mass saved me from some pain in triathlon. His doctor thinks he might have swallowed some bloom toxins.

They ever had an obvious bloom during the swim?  They run it anyway?  At the least, it'd be nice to shower that crap off so you don't get really sick from it.

They aren't going to change something as big as a IM for blooms.

If the blooms happen, maybe they can either run some boats through to try to disperse it, or....well I guess might be better off at the BOP for the swim.

Just pray it doesn't happen, or the winds is favorable, or there is a storm or something the night before.

It's been pretty cool for a while.  I don't think this will likely be a problem.

I wouldn't have thought it'd be an issue either due to the fall weather we're having, but it looks like Clarke, Bernies,Brittingham, Esther, Olbrich and Olin beaches are all closed due to blue-green algae blooms.  Maybe all the algae are dying and the toxins are being released now, so it should be done in a week.

While I personally wouldn't expect them to change the course (I know the risks, and I seem to just get a not-fun rash from it when I get anything at all) , I'd expect someone from IM corporate to freak out about throwing 2500+ people into it.  You get the wrong person swallowing enough B/G affected water and you are upping the odds of a swim casualty significantly.  The neurotox symptoms can come on really quick if that's how you react to it.

Hopefully it'll all be moot by race day,and the bloom will be gone.

Yah it was pea soup down there again today. I think it's just been relatively still all week, and what wind we've had has been pushing it to this shore. It'll probably move on before MOO.

Isn't that a pretty shade of green??  I swam in Monona out from the terrace this week and the really gross stuff is along the shoreline.  I think that where the IMMOOOOO course goes, there shouldn't be any.  Although you will have to swim through it to get to the starting line....  Hope for some windy days this week, up until Saturday night.....

If it gets really thick, then you can just run on it.  IMW - Duathlon on the lake....

Hey all,  I work at the state health department and wanted to post this link for general blue-green algae info. You can also report a case if you are exposed and develop symptoms. Hopefully it is not an issue on Sunday.

I thought that I heard that they were going to release the b/g algae eating snakes?

Maybe the other bacteria will kill them.  Lake Monona beaches were closed this weekend because of high bacteria levels.  I'm sure that brightens your day

Well, not to add fuel to the fire...

but the guy at work that did the open-water swim race with me that's been sick pretty much since found out what he has - Girdia.  he got a cold right after the swim, felt better on Tues, and had digestive issues ever since

Nothing like a little poop-loving protozoa to make life interesting during your taper.  At least they finally figured it out so he's getting medicine now, and thinks he might be able to race (with much reduced goals).

Enough's enough.  I'm using a snorkel.
